Aluminium DOES cause Alzheimer's: Expert says new findings confirm the metal is behind the devastating brain disease

A link between aluminium and Alzheimer's disease has long existed.

But many scientists says there is not enough evidence to blame the metal, used by thousands for everyday purposes to cook and store food. 

However, Professor Chris Exley, from Keele University, says his latest research confirms it does indeed play a role in cognitive decline.

Here, in a piece for medical-blogging website The Hippocratic Post, he reveals the findings from his latest study.

There has been a strong link between human exposure to aluminium and the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease for half a century or more. 

However, without definite proof, there is still no consensus in the scientific community about the role of this known neurotoxin in this devastating brain disease.

The latest research from my group, published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, makes this link even more compelling. 

In my view, the findings are unequivocal in their confirmation of a role for aluminium in some if not all Alzheimer’s disease.

New system of lymphatic vessels discovered in the brain

Vessels discovered in the brain that were thought not to exist — could revolutionise study of neurological diseases like Alzheimer's.

The brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist, new research reports.The finding means the textbooks will have to be rewritten.Discovery of the vessels may also revolutionise the study of neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and autism.

Professor Jonathan Kipnis, who led the research, was initially sceptical about the results:

"I really did not believe there are structures in the body that we are not aware of.I thought the body was mapped.I thought that these discoveries ended somewhere around the middle of the last century.But apparently they have not."
The vessels are located in the meninges — the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The vessels run near major blood vessels, which partly explains why they have been so difficult to find.

The discovery will likely have profound implications for how scientists study the neuro-immune system, Professor Kipnis said:
"Instead of asking, 'How do we study the immune response of the brain?' 'Why do multiple sclerosis patients have the immune attacks?' now we can approach this mechanistically.
Because the brain is like every other tissue connected to the peripheral immune system through meningeal lymphatic vessels.
It changes entirely the way we perceive the neuro-immune interaction.We always perceived it before as something esoteric that can't be studied. But now we can ask mechanistic questions.

We believe that for every neurological disease that has an immune component to it, these vessels may play a major role. Hard to imagine that these vessels would not be involved in a [neurological] disease with an immune component. In Alzheimer's, there are accumulations of big protein chunks in the brain.We think they may be accumulating in the brain because they're not being efficiently removed by these vessels."
The study was published in the journal Nature (Louveau et al., 2015).

Dementia, specifically in the form of Alzheimer’s, is projected to be on a significant rise in the next 20 years. Still, we only have a very rudimentary understanding of the disease, how it spreads throughout the brain, and the possible causes and origins behind it. Recent research, however, suggests a strong connection between prolonged stressors in life and the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Previous evidence has firmly established that the same risk factors for heart disease — high blood pressure, diabetes, excess weight, high cholesterol and lack of exercise — may play a role in Alzheimer’s.

Chronic Stress

A growing body of research in recent years suggests that chronic stress could be a significant trigger for many types of dementia, from mild cognitive impairment, to complete dementia. Chronic stress is consistently showing up as a major factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Such a stressor could result from a major life change, such as a ongoing illness, injury, or major surgery.
Heavy Metals

There are a growing number of Clinicians and Scientists who are convinced that excitotoxins and heavy metals play a critical role in the development of several neurological disorders, including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal neural development, certain endocrine disorders, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s

Brain Gunk

One major contributing factors in the onset of dementia is the build up of amyloid-beta plaques, otherwise known as brain gunk. These have been observed to build up after increased brain cell activity. People who have increased brain activity during their default mode networks are shown to have a greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease. High default mode network activity is also linked to daydreaming, depression, and unpleasant thoughts. This evidence points to the real possibility that our thinking patterns actually can shape our risk for dementia later on in life. 

Stress in Mice

Mice that were studied were shown to have higher levels of phosphorylated tau protein deposits when subjected to stress over periods of time. The increased levels of the tau protein are in turn found in those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
