Brutal technology field-tested on Palestinians has helped to propel the state's economy to the top of global performance charts

Late last year, the Economist published an article titled “Which economy did best in 2025?” The annual ranking of 36 mostly rich countries, conducted for the fifth year in a row, aimed to pinpoint the “economy of the year”. 

The Economist compiled data on five indicators: inflation, GDP, jobs, stock market performance, and “inflation breadth”, measuring the share of product categories with an annual price increase of more than two percent.

Countries were ranked on each measure, creating an “overall score of economic success” in 2025. To my surprise, Israel ranked third, after Portugal and Ireland. 

Two main indicators have driven this “economic success”. Israel’s economy recorded a GDP growth rate of 3.5 percent, surpassing the global average of around 3.2 percent. More surprisingly, its stock market soared, with share prices growing by 53 percent over the previous year - outperforming the world’s major stock markets.

Although Israel has been waging war on Gaza for more than two years now, such figures typically reflect a strong economy, with companies reporting solid earnings and growth, and domestic and foreign investors expressing their confidence in the country.

According to a Times of Israel report, foreign investors “flocked to Israeli markets to buy shares starting in mid-2024 after a sell-off at the outbreak of the war in 2023”. 

Citing data from the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the report noted that as of last September, “the value of holdings by foreign financial institutions in Tel Aviv stocks, excluding dual-listed stocks, reached a historic record of $19.2 billion, more than double the figure before the outbreak of war”.

The US has provided Israel with $21.7 billion in military assistance during the two years of the conflict in Gaza, a new report has said.

The paper by the Costs of War project at Brown University's Watson School of International and Public Affairs was released on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 incursion into Israel by Palestinian armed group Hamas, in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 others taken hostage.

Israeli airstrikes and a ground offensive in Gaza, launched in response to the attack, have left more than 67,000 people dead and almost 170,000 injured, according to the Palestinian health authorities. Last month, a UN commission described West Jerusalem's actions as "genocide."

Together with an additional $9.65 to $12.07 billion spent by the Pentagon on military operations in support of Israel in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East, the overall US investment in the Gaza conflict amounts to between $31.35 and $33.77 billion, the report stated.

The figure, which was based on open source data, did not include tens of billions of dollars worth of arms to be paid for and delivered in the coming years in line with deals earlier agreed between Washington and West Jerusalem, it added.

The US weapons, including combat aircraft, helicopters, missiles and bombs, "have been central to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Police operations in Gaza, the West Bank, and beyond," the report said.

Airstrikes, explosive vehicles, and bulldozers cause 'insane' destruction in Gaza City, eyewitnesses and civil defense say

The Israeli army is using airstrikes, rigged explosive APCs, and bulldozing operations to level neighborhoods and displacement centers in Gaza City. Eyewitnesses and local officials say it is to cause mass flight and prevent residents from returning.

Ahead of its planned full-scale invasion of Gaza City, the Israeli army is causing widespread destruction in the Strip's largest urban center, forcing residents to evacuate ahead of its publicly declared start date: October 7.

Recent reports from eyewitnesses and the Gaza Civil Defense show that the Israeli army has been using retrofitted armored personnel carriers (APCs) that are sent into dense population centers, including neighborhoods and displacement centers, before they are remotely detonated.

The attacks continue alongside an extensive bulldozing operation in the city and constant aerial bombardment. Between August 12 and August 18, the Israeli army destroyed over 400 buildings in the Zaytoun neighborhood and launched a limited ground incursion at its edges. The army also launched a similar operation in the Sabra neighborhood, west of Gaza City.

Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told Mondoweiss that the Israeli army destroyed over 1,500 buildings in Gaza City in aerial strikes alone since August 6, largely in Zaytoun and Sabra.

Basal explained that the Civil Defense continues to receive calls from trapped civilians in the two neighborhoods, but that there is no way to reach them due to heavy shelling and bombardment.

"We're afraid that the Israeli invasion will get even deeper into Gaza City and that Civil Defense crews will be unable to reach the places they bomb. Nowhere in Gaza is safe, whether north or south. Bombs chase residents from their homes, from their displacement centers, and even from their tents."

Abdulwahhab Ismail, a resident of the Saftawi area in northwestern Gaza, evacuated his neighborhood on Tuesday after several buildings on his street were detonated by what he described as explosive "robots."

Starsage: U.S. Fighter Pilots Test AI “Air Battle Manager” Voice Assistant

For the first time, U.S. fighter pilots took direction from an AI “air battle manager” in a Pentagon test that could change how wars are fought in the skies.

The Air Force and Navy ran the August test using Raft AI’s Starsage tactical control system on F-16s, F/A-18s and F-35s during a joint military exercise designed to evaluate new weapons systems, advanced communications and battle management platforms, Fox News Digital has learned.

In a typical combat mission, fighter pilots communicate with human air battle managers on the ground. These managers monitor radar, sensor feeds and intelligence to direct pilots on where to fly and how to position their aircraft.

During the test, fighter pilots checked in with Starsage, confirming they were on track with the mission plan. Starsage cross-referenced their reports with its simulated sensor feed and the day’s Air Tasking Order, then announced that the minimum force package had been met, signaling that the required number of aircraft were airborne and ready. Behind the scenes, the AI prepared to digitally update the mission commander and other command-and-control agencies.

A battle manager monitored each scenario, and pilots were able to direct Starsage to call them as needed for human direction. 

The first wireless flying robotic insect takes off

Engineers have created RoboFly, the first wireless flying robotic insect. RoboFly is slightly heavier than a toothpick and is powered by a laser beam. 

Insect-sized flying robots could help with time-consuming tasks like surveying crop growth on large farms or sniffing out gas leaks. These robots soar by fluttering tiny wings because they are too small to use propellers, like those seen on their larger drone cousins. Small size is advantageous: These robots are cheap to make and can easily slip into tight places that are inaccessible to big drones.

But current flying robo-insects are still tethered to the ground. The electronics they need to power and control their wings are too heavy for these miniature robots to carry.

Now, engineers at the University of Washington have for the first time cut the cord and added a brain, allowing their RoboFly to take its first independent flaps. This might be one small flap for a robot, but it's one giant leap for robot-kind. The team will present its findings May 23 at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Brisbane, Australia.

RoboFly is slightly heavier than a toothpick and is powered by a laser beam. It uses a tiny onboard circuit that converts the laser energy into enough electricity to operate its wings.

"Before now, the concept of wireless insect-sized flying robots was science fiction. Would we ever be able to make them work without needing a wire?" said co-author Sawyer Fuller, an assistant professor in the UW Department of Mechanical Engineering. "Our new wireless RoboFly shows they're much closer to real life."

Pentagon’s Bizarre Future Plans: Megacities and Urban Warfare [Video]

The narrator speaks of environments not yet experienced in city landscapes but that are inevitable, with the military requiring an adaptation of urban warfare and a willingness to “drain the swamp of non-combatants” to engage in a “high intensity conflict” with the remaining “adversaries” within. 

“Social structures are dysfunctional,” and therefore, alternate forms of governance have taken control, according to the narrator. The military must adapt to the new ways of war and must work within these “ecosystems” with minimal disruption to the non-combatant. 

The video, obtained by The Intercept via the FOI Act, is a bizarre documentary produced anonymously for a military audience, to highlight the challenges that will face the military. According to the narrator, this is an inevitable path that the military must set upon – going into a city to engage in  urban warfare.

Empire on steroids: The expansion of U.S. secret wars in Africa

The secret expansion of U.S. military bases and special operations in Africa has initiated a new and lightweight style of warfare and welcomes the next phase of American military imperialism. Unlike the highly publicized U.S. military "pivot to Asia," the proliferation of drones, special ops, mercenary spies, classified bases, proxy fighters and cyber warfare constitute what the journalist Nick Turse calls a "new light-footprint Obama doctrine" that "seems to be making war an ever more attractive and seemingly easy option."

A New Style of Fighting

On any day, elite U.S. forces conduct covert missions in an estimated 70 to 90 countries. According to Turse, special forces have been sent to an unprecedented 147 countries — 75 percent of the world's nations last year alone. This is a 145 percent increase from the rate of operations conducted under the Bush administration.

Wars conventionally fought by large infantry forces and full-scale invasions of foreign countries have made way for a new style of fighting — one that has become increasingly dependent on special forces, drones and private defense contractors. Because of the confidential nature of special ops, the Pentagon can essentially keep foreign military involvement secret from the American public. The U.S. has always had troops in Africa since the Cold War but the rate of its expansion dangerously indicates a lack of public accountability.

A Naive Claim

The shadow wars in Africa are now fought by members of the U.S. Special Operations Command and JSOC — a clandestine organization that carries out kill/capture missions. JSOC has been called "an almost industrial-scale counterterrorism killing machine" by counterinsurgency advisor John Nagl and many have described it as the president's "private assassination squad." The group reports directly to the White House. It is the military's secret military.

The notion the U.S. would someday pull its troops out of the Middle East is a rather naive claim considering the fact we have nothing short of a permanent war economy. From main operating bases that house thousands of soldiers to single airstrips used by the C.I.A. to taxi their blacked-out turboprops, the U.S. continues to maintain over 800 to 1,000 bases around the world — making us the most expansive military empire in history. Nobody really knows the exact figure — not even the military experts. The late scholar Chalmers Johnson wrote in his book, "The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic" on how the Pentagon and an uncontrollable military-industrial complex have turned the U.S. into "a new kind of military empire — a consumerist Sparta." Chalmers declares, "Another crucial characteristic that distinguished the American empire from empires of the past is that bases are not needed to fight wars but are instead pure manifestations of militarism and imperialism."

Global Instability

Military expansion does not make us safe since it cultivates global instability. The uncontrollable growth into Africa has resulted in the funding and training of proxy armies with atrocious human-rights records and has attracted mercenaries such as Erik Prince — founder of the infamous Blackwater private army hired by the D.O.D to provide security to high-level diplomats during the Iraq war.

With military presence in 53 of 54 of Africa's nations, the American empire has emerged to pick up where the former European colonial powers have left off.

US army planners have been thoroughly shaken by what they have seen Russian artillery and electronic warfare can do and how well-protected its tanks are.

 When Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster briefs, it's like Gen. Patton giving a TED talk — a domineering physical presence with bristling intellectual intensity.

These days, the charismatic commander of the U.S. Army's Training and Doctrine Command is knee-deep in a project called The Russia New Generation Warfare study, an analysis of how Russia is re-inventing land warfare in the mud of Eastern Ukraine. Speaking recently at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., McMaster said that the two-year-old conflict had revealed that the Russians have superior artillery firepower, better combat vehicles, and have learned sophisticated use of UAVs for tactical effect. Should U.S. forces find themselves in a land war with Russia, he said, they would be in for a rude, cold awakening.

"We spend a long time talking about winning long-range missile duels," said McMaster. But long-range missiles only get you through the front door. The question then becomes what will you do when you get there.

"Look at the enemy countermeasures," he said, noting Russia's use of nominally semi-professional forces who are capable of "dispersion, concealment, intermingling with civilian populations...the ability to disrupt our network strike capability, precision navigation and timing capabilities." All of that means "you're probably going to have a close fight... Increasingly, close combat overmatch is an area we've neglected, because we've taken it for granted."

So how do you restore overmatch? The recipe that's emerging from the battlefield of Ukraine, says McMaster, is more artillery and better artillery, a mix of old and new.

Over 1,000 high-profile artificial intelligence experts and leading researchers have signed an open letter warning of a “military artificial intelligence arms race” and calling for a ban on “offensive autonomous weapons”.

The letter, presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was signed by Tesla’s Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis and professor Stephen Hawking along with 1,000 AI and robotics researchers.

The letter states: “AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of [autonomous weapons] is – practically if not legally – feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.”

The authors argue that AI can be used to make the battlefield a safer place for military personnel, but that offensive weapons that operate on their own would lower the threshold of going to battle and result in greater loss of human life.

Should one military power start developing systems capable of selecting targets and operating autonomously without direct human control, it would start an arms race similar to the one for the atom bomb, the authors argue. Unlike nuclear weapons, however, AI requires no specific hard-to-create materials and will be difficult to monitor.

“The endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow. The key question for humanity today is whether to start a global AI arms race or to prevent it from starting,” said the authors.

Toby Walsh, professor of AI at the University of New South Wales said: “We need to make a decision today that will shape our future and determine whether we follow a path of good. We support the call by a number of different humanitarian organisations for a UN ban on offensive autonomous weapons, similar to the recent ban on blinding lasers.”

Musk and Hawking have warned that AI is “our biggest existential threat” and that the development of full AI could “spell the end of the human race”. But others, including Wozniak have recently changed their minds on AI, with the Apple co-founder saying that robots would be good for humans, making them like the “family pet and taken care of all the time”.

At a UN conference in Geneva in April discussing the future of weaponry, including so-called “killer robots”, the UK opposed a ban on the development of autonomous weapons, despite calls from various pressure groups, including the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

'Smart skin' could enable airplanes of the future to 'feel', claim engineers

Could aeroplanes of the future have feelings? Scientists working on a revolutionary concept to coat craft in an outer layer, close to that of human skin in function, are hoping so.

Engineers at BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre are investigating the possibility of covering a plane in thousands of micro-sensors, effectively enabling it to sense the world around it.

They claim the “smart skin” would be able to feel temperature changes and monitor wear and tear, the advantage being that problems are spotted before they become more serious. 

If successful it is expected the smart skin would reduce the need for regular ground check-ups, enable the plane to remain airborne for longer and improve the safety of on-board crew.

War crimes: Kiev uses phosphorus, cluster bombs against civilians

Ukrainian troops have on many occasions used incendiary weapons and cluster bombs against militia-held cities, acts that are banned under the international law regulating warfare, the Russian military said.

The accusation was voiced on Friday by Major General Viktor Poznikhir, the deputy commander of the chief operations branch of the Russian General Staff. Earlier some media reports claimed that munitions, which are not allowed to be used against civilian targets, were used in eastern Ukraine by the Kiev troops in their assault on armed militias.

According to the general, the Russian military are certain of a number of such attacks by Ukrainian troops. Those include artillery shelling with incendiary shells on June 12 in Slavyansk, on June 24 and June 29 in Semyonovka and on July 7 in Lisichansk. There were also air strikes with incendiary bombs on June 21 in Slavyansk and Kramatorsk and on July 23 in Donetsk and shelling with cluster shells on June 24 in Semyonovka.

"We have sufficient proof that in the cities and villages of Ukraine I mentioned, ammunition based on phosphorus was used," Poznikhir said. In all those instances characteristic fast-falling clusters of sparks were spotted in the air and massive fires on the ground were reported, proving that those were not illumination flares.

The evidence behind the ministry's assessment includes eyewitness accounts, injuries sustained by the victims of the attacks and media reports from Ukraine, the Russian general said.

The dog-not-barking question on the catastrophe over Ukraine is: what did the U.S. surveillance satellite imagery show? It’s hard to believe that – with the attention that U.S. intelligence has concentrated on eastern Ukraine for the past half year that the alleged trucking of several large Buk anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia to Ukraine and then back to Russia didn’t show up somewhere.

Israel-Gaza conflict: Israeli military ‘using flechette rounds in Gaza Strip’

The Israeli military is reportedly using flechette shells in its offensive in Gaza, weapons described as illegal under “rules of humanitarian law” by an Israeli human rights organisation.

Generally fired by a tank and described as an “imprecise weapon” ill-suited to combat in a built-up area, flechette shells explode in the air above a target, sending out a cone of thousands of tiny steel darts each no more than 4cm (1.57 ins) long.

According to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), six such shells were fired towards the village of Khuzaa in the Gaza Strip on 17 July, the Guardian reported.

The PCHR was described as saying that a woman, 37-year-old Nahla Khalil Najjar, suffered injuries to her chest in the flechette shelling, and pictures purporting to show the ammunition were passed on by a PCHR fieldworker.

When approached by the newspaper, the Israeli military did not deny using the shells in the conflict, saying that it only deploys weapons “determined lawful under international law”.

All 283 passengers and 15 crew members were killed in the plane crash. Shortly after becoming aware of the accident, many sources suggested that B777 was hit by anti-aircraft missile system. Media also quoted eyewitnesses who said that Malaysian plane was shot down from the board of Su-25 by the Ukrainian Air Force. 

The flight

Malaysian passenger plane, registration number 9M-MRD, KLM flight KL4103, took off from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur at 02.14 pm Moscow time on July 17, 2014. At about 04:20 pm Moscow time, when the plane was already over the territory of Ukraine, the contact was lost with it. It is known that, approximately 50 kilometers away from the Russian border, the liner began to descend, but whether it was the cause of damage to the aircraft or change of scheduled tier before moving from one country's airspace to another, is not yet clear. Later, B777's wreckage and bodies of passengers have been found near the village of Grabovo in the Donetsk region.

According to the State Air Traffic Service Enterprise of Ukraine (the "UkSATSE") responsible for the maintenance of passenger vessels in Ukrainian airspace, the flight of Malaysian Boeing was performed in accordance with the flight rules, without any technical faults. According to the UkSATSE CEO Dmitry Babeychuk, pilots of the KLM flight KL4103 did not report any problems. The last maintenance of the liner was held on July 11, 2014. The plane was flying at an altitude of 10.6 thousand meters, which is 2.7 thousand meters higher than the height of the official curfew imposed by the Ukrainian authorities on July 8 this year.

The radius of scattered debris of the crashed Boeing 777 is at least fifteen kilometers. This suggests that the plane began to fall apart literally in the air at high altitude. The nature of the damage to be defined by analyzing the craft wreckage is yet unknown. The fact that the Malaysian liner fell on the territory of Ukraine was reported at about 07.00 pm Moscow time. Shortly thereafter, Ukraine, Russia and Ukrainian militia began to accuse each other of the crash. In particular, Russian president Vladimir Putin blamed solely Ukraine for the accident; the president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko accused militias; while the latter accused the official Kiev authorities.

It is interesting that both Ukrainian authorities and militia announced that the airliner was shot down by anti-aircraft missile system. Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian minister of internal affairs, said that the plane was shot down by the "terrorists" who were using the "Buk anti-missile system kindly furnished to them by Mr. Putin." That complex was allegedly located near the Torez town. In turn, the RIA Novosti news agency, by citing its own sources among the militia reported that shortly before the fall of B777, the Armed Forces of Ukraine deployed a division of Buk system to the Donetsk region and started preparing for deployment of another such division to the area.

6 Reasons To Question the Official Story of the Malaysian Flight Over Ukraine

With the recent shooting down of a Malaysian Boeing 777 over Ukraine, the Western media is aflame with fingerpointing at Russia and Ukrainian separatists. However, while NATO and its media mouthpieces attempt to rekindle the Cold War and ignite a confrontation with Russia, there exists a number of fundamental questions surrounding the events that have taken place in Eastern Ukraine.

Although not a detailed list, below are six reasons why one should question the official story of the Malaysian flight shot down over Ukraine.

 1.) The Ukrainian separatists do not have the military hardware capable of shooting down an airplane at the height at which the Malaysian Boeing 777 was flying. 

Ukrainian separatists are equipped with shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles which are capable of bringing down an airplane. This much is true. However, the systems believed to be possessed by the separatists are those such as the Igla missile system, which is incapable of hitting planes at the altitudes at which the Malaysian flight was flying. 33,000 feet is simply too high an altitude to be reached with the shoulder-fired missile delivery systems with which the Ukrainian separatists are currently outfitted.

There is no evidence to suggest that the separatists possess the BUK missile systems. At the time of the writing, this writer is not aware of any reports suggesting that separatists commandeered BUK missile launching systems from the Kiev fascist government forces; the only way they could have acquired them unless given the BUK by Russia, which itself is highly unlikely given Russian strategic concerns.

 2.) The Kiev forces do have the BUK missile launching system.

 While separatist forces are not known to possess missile systems as advanced as the BUK system, the Kiev forces most certainly do.

The BUK system, which requires transportation and mounting on a tracked vehicle or large truck, is not likely to be in the hands of rebels surviving on Russian small arms and other basic forms of military and tactical aid. BUK is much more the type of system that would be property of a national government.

If the Malaysian plane was shot down using the BUK system, it is the Kiev military forces that should immediately be investigated.

 3.) Kiev moved its BUK system to the Donetsk area the day before 

Reports emerging from Russian news agencies like ITAR-TASS suggest that the Kiev military moved its BUK missile systems into the area surrounding Donetsk on Wednesday, one day before the Malaysian flight was shot down allegedly using that very missile launching system.

The fact that the type of missiles allegedly used to shoot down the Malaysian flight were not only possessed by the Ukrainian military but moved to the very region and area where the shootdown occurred implicates the Kiev forces vastly more than it does the Russians or the Ukrainian separatists.

 4.) The questions surrounding why the Malaysian flight was flying over the area to begin with.

 As reported by The Atlantic, the Federal Aviation Administration placed an order prohibiting “American pilots, airlines, charter carriers, and everyone else over whom the FAA has direct jurisdiction, from flying over parts of Ukraine” nearly three months ago.
This flight prohibition clearly demonstrates that aviation authorities fully understood that this particular flight path was over a dangerous area. So why was the Malaysian flight flying over this area to begin with?

 5.) The timing of the event 

The shooting down of the Malaysian flight conveniently comes only a day after claims by the Ukrainian military that Russia shot down a Ukrainian jet fighter over Ukrainian territory.

It also comes only days after the Western media seized on reports suggesting that the Russian government was considering targeted strikes inside Ukraine in order to protect the Ukrainian people, ethnic Russians, and Russian interests. 

Lastly, it comes only hours after the United States issues a statement announcing yet another round of sanctions against Russia.

 6.) ANOTHER Malaysian 777. 

The fact that the flight shot down over Ukraine is the same type of flight that went missing over the Indian ocean only months before is a highly questionable coincidence. Such a coincidence is almost too big to be believed.

Given the track record of the United States, NATO, and governments in general throughout history, one must at least wonder whether or not the recent shootdown of the Malaysian flight over Ukraine was not simply a false flag designed to drum up national fervor and a new Cold War ultimately leading to a confrontation with Russia.

It is important for the Western public and the rest of the world to become more streetwise regarding incidents such as the Malaysian flight and that they immediately cease to accept an entirely discredited government and media’s explanations as truth.

U.S. Sends B-2 Stealth Bombers to Europe for First Time

The U.S. Air Force has sent its most advanced bomber to Europe for the first time, amid the still-festering Ukraine crisis.

Two B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, the most sophisticated warplanes ever employed in combat by the U.S., will be based for a “short-term deployment” at Fairford, a Royal Air Force base in England 90 miles (150 km) west of London — just three hours’ flight away from the Russian border.

The U.S. Air Force news release announcing the deployment, which began on Monday, makes no mention of the Ukraine crisis. However, Adm. Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, is quoted in it as saying that this training mission “demonstrates to our nation’s leaders and our allies that we have the right mix of aircraft and expertise to respond to a variety of potential threats and situations.”
