Facebook Negotiating Multibillion-Dollar US Fine As UK Labels "Digital Gangsters"
Comment: You know where this is leading of course...Much as I loathe Facebook and everything it stands for coming down hard via self-regulation of social media giants is just the beginning and is unlikely to stop there. The ultimate goals will be independent media outlets, some of which have already been shut down across the internet.

Facebook and its executives were labeled "digital gangsters" and should immediately be subject to statutory regulation, according to an 18-month investigation ordered by the UK parliament.
The UK assessment comes as word that the Silicon Valley tech giant is negotiating a multibillion-dollar settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission, the largest handed out to a tech company in agency history.
The UK report from the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, found that Facebook purposefully obstructed its inquiry, according to The Guardian, while the social media giant failed to tackle Russian attempts to manipulate elections. [Which is a ridiculous fantasy since was never interested in manipulating any elections so we can't blame Facebook for that one]
"Democracy is at risk from the malicious and relentless targeting of citizens with disinformation and personalised ‘dark adverts’ from unidentifiable sources, delivered through the major social media platforms we use every day," warned Damian Collins, chairman of the committee.

Accuses Mark Zuckerberg,
Facebook’s co-founder and chief executive, of contempt for parliament
in refusing three separate demands for him to give evidence, instead
sending junior employees unable to answer the committee’s questions.
-
Warns British electoral law is unfit for purpose and vulnerable to

Where Gillette Went Wrong
Gillette's newest ad, 'The Best a Man Can Be', has created a social media firestorm in the last few days. We sat down to discuss the reaction, the cultural context behind it and our response to the ad. Drawing on our interviews with Warren Farrell, Cassie Jaye and our experience leading men's retreats, we ask whether the ad is helping men or toxic in and of itself.
We recently had an article in the Guardian about our men's retreats:

How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds — from a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist
Tristan Harris
Estimated reading time: 12 minutes.
I’m an expert on how technology hijacks our psychological vulnerabilities. That’s why I spent the last three years as Google’s Design Ethicist caring about how to design things in a way that defends a billion people’s minds from getting hijacked.
When using technology, we often focus optimistically on all the things it does for us. But I want you to show you where it might do the opposite.
Where does technology exploit our minds’ weaknesses?
I learned to think this way when I was a magician. Magicians start by looking for blind spots, edges, vulnerabilities and limits of people’s perception, so they can influence what people do without them even realizing it. Once you know how to push people’s buttons, you can play them like a piano.
And this is exactly what
product designers do to your mind. They play your psychological
vulnerabilities (consciously and unconsciously) against you in the race
to grab your attention.
I want to show you how they do it.

Scarlett Johansson hits back at Oxfam after charity criticises ambassador over Israeli campaign deal with SodaStream
Comment: Another example of actors who haven't a clue. Looks like the influence of her Jewish mother might have had something to do with it...Then again, who knows? Either way, sodastream and cash trumps Palestinian human rights it seems... "Democratic Israel"? Democratic for Israelis perhaps...
--------------------
Scarlett Johannson has responded to Oxfam International’s criticism of her decision to sign a deal with an Israeli company that operates in the West Bank.
The charity, of which Johannson has been an ambassador since 2007, blasted her new campaign with SodaStream International Ltd, which will see her, as their "first ever global ambassador", star in a televised advert for the soft drinks firm during the Super Bowl on 2 February.
Scarlett Johannson Blasted By Oxfam Over SodaStream Deal
Pro-Palestinian activists have condemned the soft drinks company for maintaining a large factory in the Israeli settlement in the West Bank: a territory captured by Israel in 1967, but claimed by the Palestinians.
Oxfam declared in a written statement published on their website that while the group respects the independence of its ambassadors, it opposes “all trade” from Israeli settlements, claiming that they are "illegal" and "deny Palestinian rights".
"We have made our concerns known to Ms. Johansson and we are now engaged in a dialogue on these important issues," the statement reads, before finishing: "Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law."
But the 29-year-old actress refused to back down over her campaign, stating that she “never intended on being the face of any social or political movement, distinction, separation or stance”.
"I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine," she added in a statement released to The Huffington Post on Friday.

Your face will soon be scanned by Tesco: How adverts are about to become discriminating
The Independent
When I go online, my internet server likes to offer me candid shots from the world of celebrity. Wardrobe malfunctions – a rogue nipple or a flash of knicker at a film premiere – are a regular feature on its home page, as are zany videos involving cats or weather forecasters swearing on camera.
Similarly, if I watch a football match on Sky, the advertisements seem aimed at a very stupid, loud man in his twenties, with a weakness for gambling. It is worrying to be treated as an immature moron for so much of the time, not least because there is something contagious about this cleverly marketed stupidity. One can so easily end up watching Miley Cyrus’s twerking video or having a small bet on how many goals Norwich are going to concede.
Suddenly, though, something far worse has appeared. Advertisements are about to become discriminating. Soon they could be reflecting back at you the sort of goods which are thought likely to appeal to someone of your age, gender and buying habits. We knew the internet was gathering information about shopping habits to sell more to us, and that supermarkets were playing the same trick with their loyalty cards, but now, with the friendly help of Lord Sugar, Tesco is going further.

The Realities Of Photoshop Are Revealed In This Jaw-Dropping Time-Lapse Video - Which Does Wonders For Our Self-Esteem
The Huffington Post
Magazines do a lot to try and raise our self-esteem with '10 ways to love yourself' features, only to batter us with a tsunami of images that have been heavily doctored, giving us an impossible ideal of beauty to live up to
We say impossible not because we don't have a hope of living up to it, but because the women we compare ourselves to actually don't exist.

we can see the start to finish of a photo shoot, from the moment the
model has her hair and make-up done to the final retouching.

Unplug Yourself: How Advertising and Entertainment Shapes Your Subconscious
Andre Evans
They say the subconscious is more powerful than the conscious. Usually,
people are more influenced by their innate subconscious desires or
intent than a rational and planned decision. This aspect of human nature
is heavily influenced by your daily activity.
How Corporations Influence Your Subconscious
In western society, the subconscious mind of the individual is often subject to a number of heavy influences, through entertainment mediums especially. Television, movies, and music create a profound subconscious effect on the human mind that influences and dictates the choices that they will make to at least some degree.
If you see a certain car advertisement, whether or not you rationally decide your stance on it, you are being pre-programmed to at least accept or acknowledge any claims made by the advertisement itself.
Likewise, the choice of television shows and dramatic elements appearing on TV have a psychological influence on those who watch them. According to statistics, by age 18 the average American youth will have seen over 200,000 simulated acts of violence. The glorification of drug and alcohol use predisposes an individual to rationally accept and sometimes consent to these actions.
The human self image is psychologically manipulated. When you compare yourself to a famous individual or a person who is depicted as 'successful', you may be setting yourself up to subconsciously feel less valuable from the comparison. This subconscious act creates people who are wildly insecure about their physical and mental image.
Romance and sex is also psychologically implanted through advertisements and drama. The use of sex appeal to sell products is obvious. Similarly, dramatic scenes of love and romantic feelings often prey on the human desire to feel loved, and will program an individual to act or react to those situations in certain ways. Displays of sexual suggestiveness and simulated depictions of sexual relations in media all contribute to influencing increased sexual activity in young people. Not only that, but they also lead to unhealthy obsession with sex into later years, generally resulting in pornography usage.
Its not just television and movies either. With internet advertising, viral videos depicting most of these things in horrific detail, and video games, a horde of negative media pervades over society. This power of subconscious influence guides and decides the goals, desires, and opinions of each individual.
A blurring of reality with fiction occurs in this scenario, where the individual is influenced to orient themselves in alignment with these false goals and aspirations that are implanted into them through these mediums. In extreme cases, their ability to distinguish reality from fiction is impaired, and culminates in some explosive form. If you add drugs to the entire equation (legal or illegal), you may end up with self destruction.

Advertising ban won't stop 'brand bullying', says childhood expert
A Government proposal for a total ban on advertising aimed at children would fail to end the cycle of "compulsive consumerism" in which parents are trapped, the Government's adviser on young people has warned.
A prohibition on advertising targeted at under-16s was one of the proposals mooted in a leaked document drawn up by a Downing Street aide, containing policies designed to woo women voters.
A ban on the £100m industry targeting British children through television, radio, billboards and online advertising would put commercial children's channels out of business and hit food, electronics and entertainment giants.
But Reg Bailey, chief executive of the Mothers' Union, who published a report for the Government into the commercialisation and sexualisation of young children, said insidious marketing via the internet would make an advertising ban ineffective.
The Downing Street leak coincided with the publication of a Unicef report warning that materialism had come to dominate family life in the UK as parents "pointlessly" amass goods for their children to compensate for long working hours.

Adbusters anti-globilization movement is planning a 2 month occupation of Wall Street for a demonstration
Alright you 90,000 redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,
A worldwide shift in revolutionary tactics is underway right now that bodes well for the future. The spirit of this fresh tactic, a fusion of Tahrir with the acampadas of Spain, is captured in this quote:
"The antiglobalization movement was the first step on the road. Back then our model was to attack the system like a pack of wolves. There was an alpha male, a wolf who led the pack, and those who followed behind. Now the model has evolved. Today we are one big swarm of people."— Raimundo Viejo, Pompeu Fabra University
Barcelona, Spain
The beauty of this new formula, and what makes this novel tactic exciting, is its pragmatic simplicity: we talk to each other in various physical gatherings and virtual people's assemblies … we zero in on what our one demand will be, a demand that awakens the imagination and, if achieved, would propel us toward the radical democracy of the future … and then we go out and seize a square of singular symbolic significance and put our asses on the line to make it happen.
The time has come to deploy this emerging stratagem against the greatest corrupter of our democracy: Wall Street, the financial Gomorrah of America.
On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices.
Tahrir succeeded in large part because the people of Egypt made a straightforward ultimatum – that Mubarak must go – over and over again until they won. Following this model, what is our equally uncomplicated demand?
The most exciting candidate that we've heard so far is one that gets at the core of why the American political establishment is currently unworthy of being called a democracy: we demand that Barack Obama ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington. It's time for REPRESENTATION NOT CORPORATION, we're doomed without it.
This demand seems to capture the current national mood because cleaning up corruption in Washington is something all Americans, right and left, yearn for and can stand behind. If we hang in there, 20,000-strong, week after week against every police and National Guard effort to expel us from Wall Street, it would be impossible for Obama to ignore us. Our government would be forced to choose publicly between the will of the people and the lucre of the corporations.
This could be the beginning of a whole new social dynamic in America, a step beyond the Tea Party movement, where, instead of being caught helpless by the current power structure, we the people start getting what we want whether it be the dismantling of half the 1,000 military bases America has around the world to the reinstatement of the Glass-Steagall Act or a three strikes and you're out law for corporate criminals. Beginning from one simple demand – a presidential commission to separate money from politics – we start setting the agenda for a new America.
Post a comment and help each other zero in on what our one demand will be. And then let's screw up our courage, pack our tents and head to Wall Street with a vengeance September 17.
