Charts: The Worst Long-Term Unemployment Crisis Since the Depression

Mother Jones
Dave Gilson, Tasneem Raja, and AJ Vicens

Officially, the Great Recession of 2007 ended in June 2009. Yet the economic downturn remains in full effect for millions of Americans, particularly the nearly 40 percent of the unemployed who have been looking for work for six months or more.

In less than a week, emergency federal unemployment benefits for 1.3 million of these jobless Americans are set to run out. Proponents of ending the benefits argue that the economy is expanding and that the benefits prevent people from finding work. "You get out of a recession by encouraging employment not encouraging unemployment," according to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who opposes extending benefits. However, the data shows that while corporate America has bounced back, it is not restoring all the jobs it shed when the economy tanked five years ago.

Currently, nearly 11 million Americans are unemployed. The unemployment rate stands at 7 percent. Both of those stats are improvements from a little more than four years ago, when the post-recession jobless rate peaked at 10 percent and more than 15 million people were out of work.

However, there currently are more than 4 million Americans who have been unemployed for six months or longer. Not since the Great Depression has the United States experienced such massive and persistent long-term unemployment.

Overall, the long-term unemployed (those with out a job for six months or longer) make up nearly 40 percent of all the jobless.

Long-term unemployment has not affected all Americans evenly. African-Americans and the poor make up 23 percent and 34 percent of the ranks of the long-term unemployed, respectively.

For many people, going without work for more than six months can kick off a vicious cycle or financial and personal crises that may take years to break out of.

While the unemployment rate is steadily falling, hiring has not recovered as quickly as it did during the three most recent previous recessions.

Currently, there are about three people looking for work for every job opening. Compare this to 2007, when "job seekers ratio" was nearly half that. The ratio varies widely across industries, but even in the most applicant-friendly industry, insurance and finance, has 30 percent more seekers than positions.

Meanwhile, corporate America has regained the financial ground it lost during the Great Recession. Real corporate profits after taxes have grown 30 percent since 2007, while the number of jobs is still below its pre-recession level.

And the price of continuing long-term unemployment isn't just borne by the jobless and their families. It's dragging down the entire economy—to the tune of $1 trillion a year.

JPMorgan to pay $4.5bn over mis-selling

BBC News

US investment bank JP Morgan has agreed to pay $4.5bn (£2.8bn) to investors who lost money on mortgage-related securities during the financial crisis.

The settlement is with 21 major institutional investors.

Mortgage-related investments were a major factor in the crisis, which began in 2007 with the collapse of the US housing market.

Last month JP Morgan agreed a separate, preliminary $13bn deal with the US government over mortgage securities.

As part of that deal $5.1bn would go to settle charges that the bank misled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac during the housing boom. That settlement was the biggest ever by a US bank.
Now, 21 institutional investors that put money into more than 300 residential mortgage-backed securities are to be reimbursed by the bank.

The securities in question were issued between 2005 and 2008 by JP Morgan and Bear Stearns - a bank which it took over during the financial crisis.

"This settlement is another important step in JP Morgan's efforts to resolve legacy related... matters" stemming from mortgage-related securities, JP Morgan spokeswoman Jennifer Zuccarelli said in a statement on Friday.

Friday's deal still has to be accepted by trustees for the trusts that hold the securities.

A final settlement with the US Justice Department is expected to be announced soon.

Mortgage-backed securities were sophisticated financial products created by many investment banks in the run-up to the financial crisis.

These special bonds contained a mix of investments but at their heart were supposed to be risk-free home loans.

When the housing bubble burst, the value of these assets fell sharply and the credit markets seized up. The balance sheets of many US and European banks, including those in the UK, became toxic and they had to be bailed out by their governments.

What JP Morgan is alleged to have done was sell the mortgage-backed assets knowing full well that many of the home loans were in fact very risky.

Global Protests: A Riddle Wrapped in a Mystery Inside an Enigma

I am seeing the mentality of what is called the political 'Left’ – which includes the core of the ‘Greens’ – much in evidence in these protests. This mentality thinks it is informed and streetwise about global events when its myopia makes it a manipulator’s party trick.

It sees the world in black and white when the world is multi-coloured. It sees an ‘us’ and ‘them’ on either side of an easily definable line based on background, income bracket and voting preference. Filmmaker Michael Moore is a classic, or at least that is the persona he promotes. Democrats good (or better) and Republicans bad; The Left is good, the Right is bad.

The fact that all these different political ‘sides’ are directed by the same force to give the illusion of ‘choice’ is beyond them to comprehend, not least because they don’t want to comprehend it. To do so would shatter their black and white world view of Left v Right and that is the comfort zone they don’t want to surrender. But they must to take this forward.

Michael Moore and so many others of his ilk – including many of those in the Wall Street-type protests – will have enthusiastically supported Barack Obama in 2008 when he was the most obvious fraud you could ever imagine.

If they are continuing with that same black and white ‘us and them’ naivety today – and some are because I have seen them – then they may as well go home. The system will have them for breakfast, dinner and tea.

The Left mentality cannot see the global conspiracy because it can only see the us and them. To accept the existence of a Hidden Hand they would have to accept that the Left is being manipulated by the same force that manipulates the Right and the Centre. Many can’t handle that and so it is dismissed by reflex action.

Applying the Neoliberal Hatchet, Destroying Estonia's Economy

The elite financial press continues to promote their Baltic austerity model.  Last month Michael Hudson and Jeff Sommers showed how Anders Aslund, from the bank-funded Petersen Institute, kicked the snowball down the hill to roll and grow regarding the latest incarnation of the Baltic Tiger myth.  Soon,  Robert Samuelson and  The Washington Post followed Andersen’s lead by peddling poor Latvia as their poster child for austerity’s “triumph.’  Now that Latvia’s “achievements” have been debunked, they have moved on to promote Estonia.  This was most recently been done by The Wall Street Journal, where they have rhapsodized over plucky Estonia’s economic brawn, while comments on their blog sites toss “take that, Paul Krugman!” swipes at Keynesians.

Many economists and financial press writers mimic children on amusement park rides.  They think their austerity policies are “steering” their vehicle rather than being guided by underlying structural forces.  This is only half true in the case of Estonia.  I  was a featured speaker for a debate with an Eesti Pank (Estonia’s Central Bank) member in debate this past June for a recorded event at Tallinn Technology University. Neoliberals attending gushed like pre-teens at a Justin Bieber concert exalting “how did you do it?”  The Bank official refreshingly responded with Baltic modesty, “we were born lucky.”  What did he mean?  This certainly was not the answer economists wanted!  The Bank official cited Estonia’s geography as their fortuitous comparative advantage.

In short, the Estonian “model,” essentially, is to have its capitol, Tallinn, connected to Helsinki by almost 40 ferries a day and be only 18 minutes by helicopter for executives traveling between them.  In fact, locals have come to reference Tallinn and Helsinki as simply, “Talsinki.”  Thus, for this tiny country of 1.6 million people whose population would only rank as a mid-size metropolitan area in the US, its chief advantage has been to be plugged into one of the world’s most successful social democracies.  Finnish and Swedish companies seeking labor on the cheap can simply hop and skip over to Tallinn.   Is it because Estonians are more productive that they go there?  No. Then why? Lower labor costs, of course.  Indeed, Estonians cleverly entice Scandinavian businessmen to come and escape “socialism.”  It’s kind of like the excitement of leaving the reliable wife behind for a new tryst.  This sometimes has its downsides.  Estonians are not always known for their speed.  Try calling SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) customer service and you can see this on display as an Estonian call center rep will bureaucratically take you on a tortoise-speed “run” through their system–that said, however, done with the greatest professionalism.  If it’s professionalism or high-quality design you want, you can find both in Estonia, but don’t expect speed.

What is the reality of Estonia’s economic model?  One, it has US GINI coefficient levels.  If you like massive inequality, then you found the right place with Estonia and the Baltics generally.  Secondly, they have effervescing unemployment and social pathologies only somewhat mitigated by Estonian labor (and business) exiting to and from the neighboring labor and business markets of Finland.

Indeed, the so-called Estonian “success” has delivered purchasing power rates only a third below Greece’s, even though Estonia sits next to, and is really integrated into, one of the world’s richest purchasing power countries. Linguistically, Estonian and Finnish are mutually understandable.  This make for easy penetration of each other’s business and labor markets. Data released by Statistics Estonia on 2009 reveal huge poverty for a European Union country. About 16 per cent of the Estonian population or about 211,000 people lived in relative poverty in 2009. The situation has not got any better in the two subsequent years – and the austerity measures are not likely to make things better. About the only thing good that can be said, is that Estonia’s model has worked better than Latvia, where their austerity and flat taxes have produced an exit of Biblical proportions that threatens to destroy that country.

Paradoxically – but perhaps not surprisingly – Estonia, is the country least resorting to the internal devaluation policy of the Baltics (judged a posteriori).  Yet, it is outperforming the other Baltic countries in recovering from the crisis. By this logic, then, if anything, it should be argued that the weaker one implements austerity and internal devaluation the better an economy performs!  True, the point of departure has been different in Estonia than in Latvia and Lithuania: Estonia was the economically best off of the Baltics before the crisis.  It did not need to rescue failed banks–as Estonia’s financial institutions are all foreign-owned, and thus they have no domestic banks to bailout.

The downside of near total foreign ownership, however, is they have to make all their debt-service payments to foreign nationals in a kind of new debt serfdom reflective of the days of Swedish, German, and Russian feudalism in Estonia, as Michael Hudson has noted.

How much has neighboring social democratic Finland helped Estonians in coping with their problems?  The Finns offer lots of short-term jobs in construction, services and other industries. Elaborating further, it is estimated that since the new millennium between 92,000 to 133,000 Estonians worked abroad.  This corresponds to 14-19  per cent of the total workforce. Indeed, almost, 3  per cent of the Estonian workforce went to work abroad in 2009 alone. This means that a considerable proportion of the workers have opted for a temporary job abroad – in most cases Finland. There is a clear upward trend with regard to the intentions to emigrate.

In 2006, 26  per cent of working-age Estonians considered emigration, whereas in 2010, no less than 38  per cent contemplated it. But, have migration intentions changed from short-term to longer-term? No less than 13 per cent of the potential emigrants have expressed their desire to leave Estonia permanently.  The youngest cohort (the 15-24 years old) in a study by Brit Veidemann showed the most enthusiasm about leaving.  One need not elaborate on what this means for a nation already in demographic collapse.  It is to be noted that this cohort was least interested in this option in 2006, before austerity was introduced. Yet, a survey conducted in 2009 among Estonian emigrants evidenced that while a quarter of the respondents wanted to return to Estonia,  45  per cent of them intended to stay in the  countries to which they escaped.

There is a good deal of grousing on internet chat forums about rotten work conditions and miserly salaries in Estonia. This argument is supported by a survey conducted among Estonians in 2010 concluding that 40  per cent of working-age people were afraid of dismissals, and 49  per cent of them were dissatisfied with promotion and developmental prospects in their work.

In sum, we strongly encourage The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and other outlets to stop promoting Estonia and Latvia’s austerity policies as solutions to economic crisis in the US or other European nations. Doing so only reveals why protests have emerged in over 80 countries and in nearly 2000 cities over the increasing dysfunctionality of neoliberal economic policy. To take liberty with Tacitus, “they keep making crises and call it prosperity,” Wall Street and their ideologists are massively out of touch with reality.  Their tragic-comedy can no longer be sustained.

It is disingenuous at worst and lazy at best to advocate the United States follow the model of these tiny Baltic states each with less than 2 million people.  Do we really want to create even more poverty and unemployment? Where would the 50 million Americans under a Baltic scale austerity regime escape to? Canada?  Mexico? The Virgin Islands?  Baltic workers have been pushed to flee in massive numbers. We need to get real and recognize both the outright failures of the Baltic austerity solution and the highly specialized environments that their circumscribed successes have produced.  Suggesting they are replicable in the US or larger European nations is the height of irresponsibility.

European Union chiefs are drawing up plans for a single “Treasury”

Telegraph

The proposal, put forward by Herman Van Rompuy, the European Council president, would be the clearest sign yet of a new “United States of Europe” — with Britain left on the sidelines.

The plan comes as European governments desperately trying to save the euro from collapse last night faced a new bombshell, with sources at the International Monetary Fund saying it would not pay for a second Greek bail-out.

It was also disclosed last night that British businesses are turning their back on Brussels regulations to give temporary workers full employment rights, with supermarket chain Tesco leading the charge.

Meanwhile, David Cameron is attempting to face down a rebellion tomorrow by Tory MPs in a vote over staging a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU.

Vatican Calls for ‘Global Public Authority’ and ‘Central World Bank’

Any institution, corporation, organisation,  group or individual calling for centralisation and consolidation of an already corrupt and exploitative power structure should be given a wider berth. And of course, anything the Vatican says should be ignored so no surprise it's coming out with the same old globalist drivel. You are going to see an awful lot of this crap being spouted all over the shop as the global "revolution" gets into gear. They're using the Occupy Wall St. movement to oil the wheels of their own pre-packaged solutions: More control and more centralisations.

-------------

Reuters

The Vatican called on Monday for the establishment of a "global public authority" and a "central world bank" to rule over financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises.

The document from the Vatican's Justice and Peace department should please the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrators and similar movements around the world who have protested against the economic downturn.

"Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority," was at times very specific, calling, for example, for taxation measures on financial transactions.

"The economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the basis of social coexistence," it said.

It condemned what it called "the idolatry of the market" as well as a "neo-liberal thinking" that it said looked exclusively at technical solutions to economic problems.

"In fact, the crisis has revealed behaviours like selfishness, collective greed and hoarding of goods on a great scale," it said, adding that world economics needed an "ethic of solidarity" among rich and poor nations. [Pretty much describes the vast wealth of the Vatican itself]

"If no solutions are found to the various forms of injustice, the negative effects that will follow on the social, political and economic level will be destined to create a climate of growing hostility and even violence, and ultimately undermine the very foundations of democratic institutions, even the ones considered most solid," it said.
It called for the establishment of "a supranational authority" with worldwide scope and "universal jurisdiction" to guide economic policies and decisions.

Such an authority should start with the United Nations as its reference point but later become independent and be endowed with the power to see to it that developed countries were not allowed to wield "excessive power over the weaker countries".

Chilean protests turn violent

"Real World" seeking Occupy Wall Street protestors

Here we go...More attempts to co-opt the movement. If it hasn't happened already...

--------------

Reuters

Occupy Wall Street protesters may get a new platform to voice their opinions after MTV's "The Real World" reality TV show posted a casting call reaching out to supporters of the movement.

The casting call, posted on Monday this week by "Real World" production company Bunim/Murray on website Craigslist, stated they were "seeking cast members to tell their unique stories" and specifically asks people if they are part of the Occupy Wall Street movement and in their 20s.

"The producers of Bunim/Murray productions are targeting young passionate people to be a part of the next cycle," of the TV show, an MTV spokesperson told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Occupy Wall Street movement sprang up in New York as an encampment of people in Manhattan's financial district who are protesting what they perceive as corporate greed. It has been steadily gaining more supporters in cities and towns across the United States and even around the world.

"The Real World" is one of the longest-running reality shows on television that puts young people in one house in a particular city and allows viewers to watch them interact. It was a predecessor to the more recent influx of reality TV.

The casting call was posted for the upcoming, 27th season of the franchise that is currently airing as "The Real World: San Diego" on MTV.

HOLY BAILOUT - Federal Reserve Now Backstopping $75 Trillion Of Bank Of America's Derivatives Trades

This story from Bloomberg just hit the wires this morning.  Bank of America is shifting derivatives in its Merrill investment banking unit to its depository arm, which has access to the Fed discount window and is protected by the FDIC.

This means that the investment bank's European derivatives exposure is now backstopped by U.S. taxpayers.  Bank of America didn't get regulatory approval to do this, they just did it at the request of frightened counterparties.  Now the Fed and the FDIC are fighting as to whether this was sound.  The Fed wants to "give relief" to the bank holding company, which is under heavy pressure.

This is a direct transfer of risk to the taxpayer done by the bank without approval by regulators and without public input.  You will also read below that JP Morgan is apparently doing the same thing with $79 trillion of notional derivatives guaranteed by the FDIC and Federal Reserve.

What this means for you is that when Europe finally implodes and banks fail, U.S. taxpayers will hold the bag for trillions in CDS insurance contracts sold by Bank of America and JP Morgan.  Even worse, the total exposure is unknown because Wall Street successfully lobbied during Dodd-Frank passage so that no central exchange would exist keeping track of net derivative exposure.

This is a recipe for Armageddon.  Bernanke is absolutely insane.  No wonder Geithner has been hopping all over Europe begging and cajoling leaders to put together a massive bailout of troubled banks.  His worst nightmare is Eurozone bank defaults leading to the collapse of the large U.S. banks who have been happily selling default insurance on European banks since the crisis began.

Greek refuse workers threatened with army intervention on eve of general strike

Greece’s social democratic PASOK government is preparing to use the army against striking Athens refuse workers and threatening mass arrests. The attack on the refuse workers is a pre-emptive move against the entire Greek working class ahead of today’s 48-hour general strike.

Late on Friday, the government of Prime Minister George Papandreou stepped up its efforts to break the refuse strike by commissioning private vehicles to begin collecting thousands of tons of trash in the capital. Workers seeking to block the scab operation were threatened with three-month prison sentences and fines.

On Sunday evening, riot police engaged in pitched battles with workers who had been occupying Athens’s main landfill site northwest of the city since the beginning of the dispute. Having violently taken over the site, riot police were guarding the area on Monday.

Rally in Rome Hijacked by Provocateurs

A large, peaceful demonstration in Rome against government bailouts of banks has been discredited by a group of underage rioters who attacked the police, journalist Maurizio Torealta told RT.

The journalist reported that alongside the large march there were several hundreds rioters who intentionally defamed the peaceful gathering by unemployed protesters.

An estimated 100,000 protesters gathered in Rome, as they did in Madrid. The demonstrators consisted mostly of what Torealta called “people without a future” – educated people with university degrees but jobless and with little hope of finding employment.

Among the 100,000 protesters were perhaps 500 “hoodlums,” Torealta said, noting that they constituted less that 1 percent of those gathered in Rome. It was the provocateurs who attacked police, he said, pointing out that the latter reacted rather mildly.

“Of course there was violence, but it was not the major meaning of the day,” Torealta said.

Over the course of the day dozens of demonstrators were injured in Rome, as Italian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Protesters smashed shop windows, torched cars and hurled bottles as the demonstration against corporate greed and austerity measures turned violent.

“Of course media goes where the fire is, and now the media message is ‘anarchy in Rome’ – but it is not so, and also attacking police is completely meaningless,” Torealta said.

“The real problem [the protestors] were screaming about was ‘no money to bankers – money to people.’”

The journalist said the Italian police found themselves in a difficult situation because they did appear to be ready for such violence. He said that those who started the confrontation with law enforcement officers were masked teenagers.

“They do not have a chance of turning the Rome protests into something really violent,” Torealta declared.

How COINTELPRO really works and destroys social movements: Open letter from former Tea Partier to Occupy Wall Street protesters

Fawkes in Wall Street
© Robert Johnson
I don't expect you to believe me. I want you to read this, take it with a grain of salt, and do the research yourself. You may not believe me, but I want your movement to succeed. From a former tea partier to you, young new rebels, there's some advice to prevent what happened to our now broken movement from happening to you. I don't agree with everything your movement does, but I sympathize with your cause and agree on our common enemy. You guys are very intelligent and I trust that you will take this in the spirit it is intended.

I wish I could believe this Occupy Wall Street was still about (r)Evolution, but so far, all I am seeing is a painful rehash of how the government turned the pre-Presidential election tea party movement into the joke it is now. We were anarchists and ultra-libertarians, but above all we were peaceful. So, the media tried painting us as racists. But when that didn't work they tried to goad us into violence. When that failed, they killed our movement with money and false kindness from the theocratic arm of the Republican party. That killed our popular support.

I am sharing these observations, so you guys know what's going on and can prevent the media from succeeding in painting you as violent slacker hippies rebelling without a cause, or from having the movement be hijacked by a bunch of corporatists seeking to twist the movement's original intentions. If you think this can't happen, it happened to the Independence Party and the tea party movement. Don't let it happen to your movement as well.

Comment: What the author details comes right out of the Ponerization/Cointelpro playbook described in Andrew Lobaczewski's Political Ponerology.

Here's how they turned our movement into a bunch of pro-corporate Republican party rebranding astroturf, and this is how I predict they are turning your movement into a bunch of pro-corporate Democratic party rebranding astroturf. I believe many of these things are already happening, so take note.

1- The media will initially and purposely avoid covering your dissenting movement to cause confusion about what your movement is about within mainstream audiences. This is to enrage you and make you appear unreasonable, and perhaps even invisible.

2- While the obfuscation is happening, corporatists/government stooges will infiltrate and give superficial support, focus and financial backing to the targeted movement. In the tea party movement's case, it was the religious Republicans and Koch Brothers. In this case, it's the Public Sector Unions (the organizations as quasi-human entities, not the members themselves) and Ultra Rich liberals who pretend to care, but frankly do not serve liberators and freedom seekers but rather the interests of those who run the Public Sector Unions and the Democratic Party. Democrat, Republican, these parties are all part of the same corporate ruling system. Case in point: http://www.debates.org/

3-The media will cover the movement only after this infiltration succeeds. Once the infiltration is completed the MSM will manufacture public media antipathy towards the movement by using selective focus on the movement's most repulsive elements or infiltrators on the corporate Conservative media side, while the corporate Liberal media will create a more sympathetic tragic hero image -- this is the flip side of the tea party, but same media manipulation tactics. I go into greater detail on this tactic here.

4- Someone in the Democratic Party will feign sympathy for the movement and falsely "non-partisan" entities provide tons of funding and unwanted organization, just as was done with the tea party movement by Republicans. Once people assume that the government operatives are their friends, the government will hijack the movement and the threat of your movement will be neutralized.

If this new Occupy Wall Street movement is to survive, here's what needs to be done.

1- Loudly denounce violence and disavow the violent rabblerousers of the movement. They do not help the cause.

2- Be image conscious. Present your best face and call out those who act like fools within the movement. People are more likely to pay attention to you in your Sunday dress and bringing homemade food, than when you are drinking a bottle of Snapple and chomping on Big Macs while you are looking like a slacker rich hipster/unwashed hippie stereotype.

3- Accept that you've already been infiltrated by the government, and work hard to say, and state what your movement is and is not about. "No, this isn't about unions or Liberals, conservatives or bored spoiled brats. This is about 99% of our population being exploited and manipulated for the sake of profit." "No we will not resort to violence." "Yes, all we want is for for the end of government collusion with corporate entities that are illegitimately recognized as people." And, so forth...

4- Don't forget who you are as the illusions are thrown at you. Corporatists are masters of illusions. That's the most powerful weapon they have. That's how they sell products you don't need and convince you to justify accepting atrocities for the sake of products Don't fall for it. Otherwise, your cause will be lost. Be wary of large donations from special interest groups or non-profit corporations that were not involved this movement from the inception. Special interests groups are not your allies. Non-profit corporations are still corporations, and unfortunately, too many of them care more about donations than doing the right thing. Killing a movement with kindness is easy.

5- Remain independent and focused. If you can, pick a face to represent your movement. Rosa Parks wasn't just a random lady in a bus -- She was chosen. You too can use the power of illusion against those who oppose you.

I wish your movement better luck than we had with the tea party movement before it got hijacked by the theocrats and corporatists. We used to be non-partisan too. We were the older version of you. But, I believe that as the media apparatchik and infiltrators start to twist your cause, you will understand the frustration us early adopter tea partiers felt and that we were not your enemy after all. A fascist oligarchy on the verge of winning is our common enemy. This should be your focus. Don't be dazzled by the illusion as we were. For the sake of our future, know who you are.

Thank you for reading. I would love to read your ideas on the subject. Correct me where I am wrong. Explain what is going right. This is ultimately your fight.

EDITS: To understand how movements get hijacked, check out this fantastic video that JamesCarlin shared.

If my essay seems too conspiratorial for your tastes, try Hibernator's excellent and much less paranoid sounding summary below:

"Someone starts a movement. It starts small, and there's a lot going on in the world, so the mainstream media gives it minimal coverage. Today's mainstream media is also understaffed, so they don't investigate and they wait for someone else to slap a label on it.

Eventually a sound byte X pops up above the noise and the mainstream media uses this to engage viewers and define the movement. This defining characteristic X spreads like a meme.

People in power now notice what's going on, and think to themselves "Hmm, this new movement is defined by X, and that's almost in line with my goals, so maybe I can use them to further my ends."

But people in power are all labelled as Democrats or Republicans, so now the media applies the polarizing filter of American politics to associate movement X with one of the parties.

The original movement has now been labelled X, and associated with a political party, and none of this happened because of any 'government conspiracy.' It just happened because that's what you get as output when you plug something new into the American political system."

Economic Apocalypse Goes Mainstream: Meltdown In Two To Three Weeks; It Will Spread Everywhere; Most Serious Financial Crisis Ever; Worse Than Great Depression

Predictions of an economic apocalypse are no longer restricted to the realm of fringe doom and gloomers lurking in the dark corners of the internet.

As we’ve previously suggested uncertainty now pervades the social consciousness, not just in America, but the world over.

Every major media outlet in developed nations is now reporting on the headwinds facing the so-called recovery.

The problems and threats confronting the stability of the globe can no longer be dismissed as theoretical arguments, because they are now being actualized – in real time.

Greek strikes have nearly driven that country to a standstill, and the former deputy finance minister told CNBC a Greek default is “inevitable,” and that the only hope was for an orderly approach to dealing with the fallout.

You’ll note that this week Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke used exactly the same word, “orderly,” when discussing the threat posed to the European and U.S. economies resulting from a Greek default, going so far as to say that if such an event were “disorderly” it would “have a very substantial impact not only on our financial system, but on our economy.”

We now have reports that President Obama, in an attempt to distance himself from the blame which will assuredly be placed squarely on the White House once it becomes apparent that the government’s multi-trillion dollar attempts to stabilize the economy have failed, has indirectly joined with the protesters on Wall Street by pointing the finger not at himself, but the too-big-to-fail banks ...

World facing worst financial crisis in history, Bank of England Governor says

You don't say?

--------

Sir Mervyn King was speaking after the decision by the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee to put £75billion of newly created money into the economy in a desperate effort to stave off a new credit crisis and a UK recession.

Economists said the Bank’s decision to resume its quantitative easing [QE], or asset purchase programme, showed it was increasingly fearful for the economy, and predicted more such moves ahead.

Sir Mervyn said the Bank had been driven by growing signs of a global economic disaster.
“This is the most serious financial crisis we’ve seen, at least since the 1930s, if not ever. We’re having to deal with very unusual circumstances, but to act calmly to this and to do the right thing.”

Announcing its decision, the Bank said that the eurozone debt crisis was creating “severe strains in bank funding markets and financial markets”.

The Monetary Policy Committee [MPC] also said that the inflation-driven “squeeze on households’ real incomes” and the Government’s programme of spending cuts will “continue to weigh on domestic spending” for some time to come.

The “deterioration in the outlook” meant more QE was justified, the Bank said.
Financial experts said the committee’s actions would be a “Titanic” disaster for pensioners, savers and workers approaching retirement. Sir Mervyn suggested that was a price worth paying to save the economy from recession.

Under QE, the Bank electronically creates new money which it then uses to buy assets such as government bonds, or gilts, from banks. In theory, the banks then use the cash they gain to increase their lending to businesses and individuals.

By increasing the demand for gilts, QE pushes down the interest rate yields paid to holders of these and other bonds. Critics of the policy say it pushes up inflation and drives down sterling.
The National Association of Pension Funds yesterday called for urgent talks with ministers to address the negative impact of lower gilt yields on pension funds. Joanne Segars, its chief executive, said QE makes it more expensive for employers to provide pensions and will weaken the funding of schemes as their deficits increase. “All this will put additional pressure on employers at a time when they are facing a bleak economic situation,” she said.

Ros Altman, of Saga, said the latest round of QE was “a Titanic disaster” that would increase pensioner poverty. As well as fuelling inflation, she said, falling bond yields would make annuities more expensive, “giving new retirees much less pension income for their money and leaving them permanently poorer in retirement”.

The MPC also voted to keep the Bank Rate at its historic low of 0.5 per cent, another decision that hurts savers. Yesterday, protesters outside the Bank’s headquarters smashed a giant piggy bank to symbolise the situation of pensioners and others forced to raid savings to keep up with the rising cost of living.

Asked about the plight of savers, Sir Mervyn said it was more important to support the wider economy than to support them. He suggested that savers would not be helped by deliberately pushing the British economy into recession. Yesterday’s decision was the first move on QE since 2009, during the global credit crisis, when the Bank injected £200 billion into the economy.

Some analysts believe that this round of QE could be less effective than the previous one, forcing the Bank to create even more money this time.

Michael Saunders of Citigroup, forecast that there could be as much as £225 billion more QE by next year. “I think they will do lots more QE,” he said. “It’s both that the economy is weak but also that the MPC’s view is that QE is not a very powerful tool, or rather it takes a large amount of QE to have much effect on the economy.”

The Bank is supposed to keep inflation near a target of 2 per cent. Inflation now stands at 4.5 per cent, and the Bank admitted it is likely to hit 5 per cent as soon as this month. The Bank’s own research shows that as well as stimulating the economy, QE pushes up prices.
Sir Mervyn insisted that yesterday’s move was still consistent with the 2 per cent inflation target, saying that the slowing economy means inflation could actually fall below that mark “by the end of next year or in 2013”.

The Governor insisted that the MPC’s decisions had been the correct response to events. “The world economy has slowed, America has slowed, China has slowed, and of course particularly the European economy has slowed,” he said. “The world has changed and so has the right policy response.”

City traders took heart from the Bank’s move to boost growth, with the FTSE 100 rising 3.7 per cent to 5,29, its biggest two-day gain since 2008.

The Bank’s decision came after mounting political pressure from ministers worried that Sir Mervyn was not reacting urgently enough to the darkening global economic outlook.

George Osborne, the Chancellor, welcomed the Bank’s move, saying: “The evidence shows that it [QE] will help keep interest rates down and boost demand and that will be a help for British families.”

Britain: Sharp Rise in Demand for Food Handouts from Poverty-Stricken Families

Britain has seen a sharp increase in the number of people unable to afford to feed themselves at the most basic level, thanks to the worsening economic climate and changes to the benefit system, according to a survey by a leading food charity.

In the past year FareShare, which redistributes waste food from major food manufacturers and supermarkets to social care charities, has seen a 20% rise in the number of people it is feeding – from 29,500 a year to 35,000.

And many of those, blighted by rising unemployment and business failures, are coming from the sorts of stable family backgrounds once considered immune to the worst effects of recession.

The new findings, which are backed up by research from other organisations working in the same field, will make sobering reading for the Conservative party as it gathers in Manchester this weekend for its annual conference, where the direction of the government's stringent deficit reduction programme will be carefully scrutinised.

How To Legally Plunder the Rothschilds

The best way to defeat an enemy is to learn how to use his/her weapons against them. I told you I am not a man of violence, and I oppose violent revolution on the grounds that it ends up with sheeple killing sheeple under the direction of the wolves. That doesn't mean we take things lying down.

What I am going to show you is one of the primary reasons why the Satanic Psychopaths have targeted me for assassination, harassment and destruction. When it comes to money, I am the man who "knows too much".

You are about to witness a historic event that will be known as the Stock Market Crash of 2011. In order for the Psychopaths to profit from this event they need the following:

1. Money in the Stock Market. Your money.

2. Insiders and Institutions ready to sell their stocks and create a falling market.

3. Stock Options in place that will grow in value as the market collapses.

As I have stated, money doesn't just disappear. It merely transfers from one hand to another.

If you were sitting in a Las Vegas Casino, and the most successful gambler in the world walked in and sat down at the roullette wheel, you would be a fool not to shadow his bets. I don't do Casino gambling, but I do know how to beat the Rothschilds and Rockefellers in their Wall Street Casino. I want you to learn how as well. This, my friends, will be far more enjoyable then standing outside a building with a Protest sign.

1. Open up an online trade account with E-trade or Scott Trade or whoever.

2. Get approved to trade stock options.

3. Fund your online account with a few dollars you can afford to lose. Don't bet the farm!

4. Buy Put Options on the companies I recommend in these articles and on my radio program. My radio program can be heard on Renseradio.com.

5. Get set up today and start trading Monday morning.

You will be placing your bets against companies that are currently being looted, One Put Option controls 100 shares of stock in a company. When the company goes down $1.00, your Option will be worth an additional $100.00.

1. Buy "At the Market" and "To Open" to keep things simple.

2. Buy one dollar or so below the current market price of the stock.

3. Buy the November Option. This gives you until mid-November for the stock to transfer its money to you as it declines.

4. Sell when you make $100 on the Option.

5. Donate 10% to this website by clicking the button above. This is my fee for teaching you. It works on the honor system.

Stock Option Recommendations for Monday:

1. JP Morgan Chase (symbol JPM): Now trading at $30.12 and soon will drop much lower. Nothing more satisfying than profiting from a joint concern between the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds. Buy the November 29.00 Put or lower, depending where the market is at Monday Morning.

2. Morgan Stanley (Symbol- MS): Now trading at $13.51 and soon will be worth pennies on the dollar. Another Rockefeller-Rothschild concern. Ah that warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from plundering the plunderers. Buy the November $12.00 Put.

3. Exxon (XOM): Otherwise known as Rockefeller Oil. Buy a November Put at $70 or lower.

4. MGM Resorts (MGM): Another Illuminati enterprise. Buy the November Put at $8.00 or lower.

5. Donate $10.00 to this website so that I know you are "in", and appreciate my hard work.

6. Make this article go Viral. Tweet It, Post it on Facebook, email it to your friends. The more people that do this, the more money we plunder from the plunderers. Guaranteed to give the Psychopaths a myo-cardial infarction.

7. Buy silver bullion from me with your life insurance cash values, savings and retirement before supplies disappear.
