Researchers at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) believe they may be on the cusp of using neural input to fundamentally change the human-machine interface.
It is conceivable, for example, that a human brain signal could control a Virginia-class submarine instead of needing to input controls through touchscreens, knobs, and dials, Dr Arati Prabhakar, director of DARPA, said during a 14 November discussion at the Defense One Summit in Washington, DC.
Recent research is leading towards the possibly of obtaining a “very sophisticated level of control” of a complex mechanical system with neural input, she said.
Prabhakar explained that neuroscience advancements are nearing a stage where people with prosthetic limbs could control those with their minds, which connect directly to the prosthetic through implants on the brain and ports on the skull.
