The post describes the debacle of the UK Smart Meter roll out and the direct involvement of UK Government Department DECC in creating a ghastly mess. DECC has since morphed into BEIS (Department of Energy and Climate Change now = Business Energy and Industrial Strategy).


The smart meter programme is a case study of Whitehall at its most incompetent. Meter manufacturers – who want a bigger market and under present plans will get one that is of the order of SIX times by value their current market for dumb meters – sold smart meters to Ministers with marketing buzzwords about “customer empowerment”, “smart” this and that, and the “digital age”. Officials helped things along by grossly overstating the benefits to £4.9bn. Thus, for example, the appraisal assumed for electricity savings of 2.8% consumption; a big study in the Netherlands of actual performance found savings of 0.6% on average. The claimed benefits are far more optimistic than any other of nine jurisdictions I have analysed – they are a fiction of DECC’s imagination.

The government is already spying on us through spying on us through our computers, phones, cars, buses, streetlights, at airports and on the street, via mobile scanners and drones, through our credit cards and smart meters (see this), television, doll, and in many other ways.

The CIA wants to spy on you through your dishwasher and other “smart” appliances. Slate reported in 2012:

Watch out: the CIA may soon be spying on you—through your beloved, intelligent household appliances, according to Wired.

In early March, at a meeting for the CIA’s venture capital firm In-Q-Tel, CIA Director David Petraeus reportedly noted that “smart appliances” connected to the Internet could someday be used by the CIA to track individuals. If your grocery-list-generating refrigerator knows when you’re home, the CIA could, too, by using geo-location data from your wired appliances, according to SmartPlanet.

“The current ‘Internet of PCs’ will move, of course, toward an ‘Internet of Things’—of devices of all types—50 to 100 billion of which will be connected to the Internet by 2020,” Petraeus said in his speech. He continued:

Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters—all connected to the next-generation Internet using abundant, low cost, and high-power computing—the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.

Europe rejects smart meters - Smart grid technology may not be needed

The transition to an intelligent electricity grid in Europe can take place without smart meters, according to industry players who spoke at the annual Eurelectric conference in Vilnius this week.

Euractiv reports that the news will embarrass the European Commission, which pushed a Europe-wide plan to roll out smart meters years ago.

More efficient means include quicker integration of renewables, the development of energy storage and energy demand response solutions, said the industry representatives.

The actual benefits of smart meters were also questioned at the conference, as several member states have done previously. Germany, for instance, has decided not to have a national roll-out plan at all, running counter to requirements laid out in EU legislation.

EU member states are required to implement smart meters under the 2009 Third Energy Package wherever it is cost-effective to do so, with the goal to replace 80% of electricity meters with smart meters by 2020.The 80% target applies to both households and commercial buildings, a Commission spokesperson confirmed. The EU executive will publish in the next one to two years a report on smart meters "in the context of our regular monitoring exercise of the progress of members states," the spokesperson said.

Progress had been sluggish across the bloc in installation of the equipment. And the countries that do have a commitment to smart meters, such as the UK, have run into hurdles in completing its roll-out because some meters would cease to work if a consumer decided to change energy supplier. Markus Merkel, a senior advisor to the management board of German distribution system operator (DSO) EWE, told the Eurelectric conference that "there isn't a positive business case" for smart meters in Germany.

Member states are expected to conduct their own cost-benefit analyses for their national smart meters roll-out plans, the official said.

The “Internet of Things” (IoT) and Smart Grid technologies will together be aggressively integrated into the developed world’s socioeconomic fabric with little-if-any public or governmental oversight. This is the overall opinion of a new report by the Federal Trade Commission, which has announced a series of “recommendations” to major utility companies and transnational corporations heavily invested in the IoT and Smart Grid, suggesting that such technologies should be rolled out almost entirely on the basis of “free market” principles so as not to stifle “innovation.”[1]

As with the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, the FTC functions to provide the semblance of democratic governance and studied concern as it allows corporate monied interests and prerogatives to run roughshod over the body politic.

The IoT refers to all digital electronic and RFID-chipped devices wirelessly connected to the internet. The number of such items has increased dramatically since the early 2000s. In 2003 an estimated 500 million gadgets were connected, or about one for every twelve people on earth. By 2015 the number has grown 50 fold to an estimated 25 billion, or 3.5 units per person. By 2020 the IoT is expected to double the number of physical items it encompasses to 50 billion, or roughly 7 per individual.[2]

The IoT is developing in tandem with the “Smart Grid,” comprised of tens of millions of wireless transceivers (a combination cellular transmitter and receiver) more commonly known as “smart meters.” Unlike conventional wireless routers, smart meters are regarded as such because they are equipped to capture, store, and transmit an abundance of data on home energy usage with a degree of precision scarcely imagined by utility customers. On the contrary, energy consumers are typically appeased with persuasive promotional materials from their power company explaining how smart meter technology allows patrons to better monitor and control their energy usage.

A Government plan to put ‘smart meters’ into every British home – costing households £200 each – will be launched this week despite fears they will not work and that they pose a security risk to power supplies.

The £11 billion project, introduced to meet EU green targets, is supposed to cut down energy consumption and reduce bills.

But official reports seen by The Mail on Sunday reveal that: trials show consumers with smart meters save far less energy than predicted; five countries considering such a plan have decided it would cost more money than it saves; the meters do not work in a third of British homes, including high-rise flats, basements and those in rural areas: hackers and cyber-terrorists could break into the system  causing chaos in the national grid, or carry out large-scale fraud by fiddling bills.

Energy companies will begin the mass installation of smart meters next year at a cost of at least £200 per home, and have admitted the expense will be passed on to customers.

At the federal level, the illusion of representative government is now over. With a few exceptions, for-profit interests have colonized government systems that were originally intended to serve people.
The danger of allowing this virus to continue, of course, is that the casualty always eventually becomes life itself. Like any virus.

Presented to you is Exhibit A: chief telecom industry lobbyist Tom Wheeler now chairs the FCC.  This is yet another FDA-Monsanto-esque revolving door of corruption, which sidelines the rights and safety of an entire nation.

Reuters interviewed one veteran Washington telecom insider, who spoke anonymously:

“All of the senators in the Commerce Committee know Tom as a lobbyist who funnels funds to them, not as a stand-up guy from a regulatory agency who is able to take heat.”

Wheeler’s career has been dedicated to obsessively expanding the telecom industry to what it is now: an uncontrollable behemoth in league with the NSA and its ilk. And a facade which intentionally suppresses an avalanche of scientific evidence for the harm it is causing.

According to thousands of scientific studies, the inescapable truth is that Big Telecom’s cell phones, towers, and the offshoot “smart” networks which have spawned and are spidering throughout neighborhoods in the western world are harming all biological life – from the whole being down to the cellular level. From brain tumors to DNA damage to functional impairments such as tinnitus and insomnia. And from bees losing their homing ability to trees prematurely dying.  This is the conclusion presented from, literally, thousands of peer-reviewed studies.

Despite the unconscionable practice by Wheeler’s wireless industry to systematically cover all this up, skew the science, invent fake studies and oppress dissident researchers, the truth is becoming obvious. Or maybe not, if you’re one of perhaps several million who have had symptoms after having a “smart” meter installed – such as inability to sleep, increasingly foggy thinking, ringing in the ears, headaches or heart palpitations – but haven’t connected the dots as to the cause.

Last Thursday, activists brazenly called Wheeler out during his recent visit to San Francisco. And this coming Thursday, they will face down corrupted power brokers at the California Public Utilities Commission.

The so-called “smart” grid infrastructure facilitates unprecedented illegal data-mining by utilities and government, made complete with utility meters that enable their colonization of your home. (The CPUC has admitted plans to take the detailed in-home data harvested by “smart” meters, and sell it on the open market. And the US Government and Department of Justice have done a secret deal which facilitates the sharing of data harvested from “smart” grids, exempting utilities and other industries of any wrongdoing.  Note: There is no requirement to allow a “smart” meter on your home.  See the resources at bottom and contact your utility.)

Of course, all of this is illegal. And it’s based on boldfaced lies, misinformation and propaganda. The show has been taken over. There is no oversight left in town. No agency or department within this broken-down system is coming to our rescue.
