The Present Phase of Stagnation in the Foundations of Physics Is Not Normal

Nothing is moving in the foundations of physics. One experiment after the other is returning null results: No new particles, no new dimensions, no new symmetries. Sure, there are some anomalies in the data here and there, and maybe one of them will turn out to be real news. But experimentalists are just poking in the dark. They have no clue where new physics may be to find. And their colleagues in theory development are of no help.
Some have called it a crisis. But I don't think "crisis" describes the current situation well: Crisis is so optimistic. It raises the impression that theorists realized the error of their ways, that change is on the way, that they are waking up now and will abandon their flawed methodology. But I see no awakening. The self-reflection in the community is zero, zilch, nada, nichts, null. They just keep doing what they've been doing for 40 years, blathering about naturalness and multiverses and shifting their "predictions," once again, to the next larger particle collider.

I think stagnation describes it better. And let me be clear that the problem with this stagnation is not with the experiments. The problem is loads of wrong predictions from theoretical physicists.

The problem is also not that we lack data. We have data in abundance. But all the data are well explained by the existing theories - the standard model of particle physics and the cosmological concordance model. Still, we know that's not it. The current theories are incomplete.

We know this both because dark matter is merely a placeholder for something we don't understand, and because the mathematical formulation of particle physics is incompatible with the math we use for gravity. Physicists knew about these two problems already in 1930s. And until the 1970s, they made great progress. But since then, theory development in the foundations of physics has stalled. If experiments find anything new now, that will be despite, not because of, some ten-thousands of wrong predictions.
Ten-thousands of wrong predictions sounds dramatic, but it's actually an underestimate. I am merely summing up predictions that have been made for physics beyond the standard model which the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was supposed to find: All the extra dimensions in their multiple shapes and configurations, all the pretty symmetry groups, all the new particles with the fancy names. You can estimate the total number of such predictions by counting the papers, or, alternatively, the people working in the fields and their average productivity.

They were all wrong. Even if the LHC finds something new in the data that is yet to come, we already know that the theorists' guesses did not work out. Not. A. Single. One. How much more evidence do they need that their methods are not working?

Could Multiple Personality Disorder Explain Life, the Universe and Everything?

In 2015, doctors in Germany reported the extraordinary case of a woman who suffered from what has traditionally been called “multiple personality disorder” and today is known as “dissociative identity disorder” (DID). The woman exhibited a variety of dissociated personalities (“alters”), some of which claimed to be blind. Using EEGs, the doctors were able to ascertain that the brain activity normally associated with sight wasn’t present while a blind alter was in control of the woman’s body, even though her eyes were open. Remarkably, when a sighted alter assumed control, the usual brain activity returned.

This was a compelling demonstration of the literally blinding power of extreme forms of dissociation, a condition in which the psyche gives rise to multiple, operationally separate centers of consciousness, each with its own private inner life.

Modern neuroimaging techniques have demonstrated that DID is real: in a 2014 study, doctors performed functional brain scans on both DID patients and actors simulating DID. The scans of the actual patients displayed clear differences when compared to those of the actors, showing that dissociation has an identifiable neural activity fingerprint. In other words, there is something rather particular that dissociative processes look like in the brain.

There is also compelling clinical data showing that different alters can be concurrently conscious and see themselves as distinct identities. One of us has written an extensive treatment of evidence for this distinctness of identity and the complex forms of interactive memory that accompany it, particularly in those extreme cases of DID that are usually referred to as multiple personality disorder.

The history of this condition dates back to the early 19th century, with a flurry of cases in the 1880s through the 1920s, and again from the 1960s to the late 1990s. The massive literature on the subject confirms the consistent and uncompromising sense of separateness experienced by the alter personalities. It also displays compelling evidence that the human psyche is constantly active in producing personal units of perception and action that might be needed to deal with the challenges of life.

Although we may be at a loss to explain precisely how this creative process occurs (because it unfolds almost totally beyond the reach of self-reflective introspection) the clinical evidence nevertheless forces us to acknowledge something is happening that has important implications for our views about what is and is not possible in nature.

Now, a newly published paper by one of us posits that dissociation can offer a solution to a critical problem in our current understanding of the nature of reality. This requires some background, so bear with us.

Russian scientists raising funds to rebuild Tesla Tower, satisfy world energy hunger

Two Russian physicists are fundraising to realize their project for wireless energy transmission once proposed by brilliant 20th-century scientist Nikola Tesla. Solar panels and an upgraded Tesla Tower could solve global energy hunger, they say.

Leonid and Sergey Plekhanov, graduates of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, claim they have spent years scrutinizing the Nikola Tesla’s patents and diaries and they believe that with his most ambitious project – transcontinental wireless energy transmissions – Tesla came very close to unprecedented scientific discovery that could be brought to fruition.




The enthusiasts say they need about $800,000 to reconstruct the famous Wardenclyffe Tower once created by Tesla himself to implement his ideas and find a commercial application for his ideas on long-distance wireless energy transmission.

The Plekhanov brothers are raising money through IndieGogo kickstarter. The campaign will last until July 25. So far the project has managed to collect only 2 percent of the desired sum (about $18,000 out of the desired $800,000 as we publish this article).

According to the authors of the project, as of today all human civilization’s electric energy needs could be covered with a single installation of solar panel measured approximately 316 by 316 kilometers (100,000 square kilometers altogether) positioned in a desert somewhere near the equator.

They believe the only stumbling block to such a project is the delivery of electric energy to final consumers, as the loss of energy directly depends on the distance of transmission.

I didn't watch to the end. Somewhere in the middle, I left the room - I was afraid that the movie would not have a happy ending. That's how I am. Anyway I was thinking about these pills that can make you work as a genius, with passion, with fun, and also with success. So I went back to my desk and the PC, and then, accidentally (looking for something else) I stumbled on a book about "How to become a genius". Apparently there is a whole technology, and it works!

Physicists find doubly transient chaos can emerge due to dissipation

A team of researchers, one from the U.S. and the others from Hungary, has found that a condition they've dubbed doubly transient chaos can emerge from a system due to dissipation. In their paper they've had published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the team describes how their experiments with a triple-magnet pendulum showed that even systems that come to stop eventually can have chaos attributes.

At first blush, most people recognize chaos when they see it—a crowd of people, each behaving unpredictably, for example. In physics, chaos can be seen with examples such as the constantly changing images that result from fractal geometry. One property that all chaotic systems have in common is that changes continue occurring (due either to an external force or lack of one such as gravity or friction), aka, transient chaos, as long as the system is in existence—otherwise, the system would dissipate to a non-changing state. But, is that system that results chaotic as well? The researchers in this new effort say yes, but not in the same way as other chaotic systems. For that reason, they have called it doubly transient chaos.

Chaos can exist in even the simplest of systems, such as a pendulum, for example. If it's started and left to swing till it stops, it will follow a routine that can be accurately described mathematically—but not if it is disturbed periodically by an external energy source—say a person reaching over and pushing it a little bit to keep it going. If that extra push can't be described in an orderly way, then the motion and duration of the pendulum's swing can be described as chaotic. The researchers used just such an example to prove their idea about transient chaos. They used a pendulum with three magnets attached to a triangle—suggesting three final states for the pendulum when it finally stops moving. In such a setup, the pendulum was subject to magnetic forces, gravity, and air drag.

In studying the ways in which the pendulum swung and eventually stopped, the researchers found that it conformed to doubly transient chaos—one of whose hallmarks is that parameters describing its rate of change to a final state are not constant as they are with transient chaos, but are instead exponential.

The researchers believe that doubly transient chaos may be at play in many other systems (chemical reactions, binary star behavior, etc.) and because of that are likely far less predictable than has been previously thought.

Do We Live in the Matrix?

In the 1999 sci-fi film classic The Matrix, the protagonist, Neo, is stunned to see people defying the laws of physics, running up walls and vanishing suddenly. These superhuman violations of the rules of the universe are possible because, unbeknownst to him, Neo’s consciousness is embedded in the Matrix, a virtual-reality simulation created by sentient machines. 


The action really begins when Neo is given a fateful choice: Take the blue pill and return to his oblivious, virtual existence, or take the red pill to learn the truth about the Matrix and find out “how deep the rabbit hole goes.” 


Physicists can now offer us the same choice, the ability to test whether we live in our own virtual Matrix, by studying radiation from space. As fanciful as it sounds, some philosophers have long argued that we’re actually more likely to be artificial intelligences trapped in a fake universe than we are organic minds in the “real” one. 


But if that were true, the very laws of physics that allow us to devise such reality-checking technology may have little to do with the fundamental rules that govern the meta-universe inhabited by our simulators. To us, these programmers would be gods, able to twist reality on a whim. 


So should we say yes to the offer to take the red pill and learn the truth — or are the implications too disturbing?
