The planetary bio-surveillance grid

 
Let's imagine a world where a faulty worldview in a mechanistic reality has given birth to a psychotic technocratic elite that seeks to monitor every aspect of reality in AI "digital twin" systems -- but the public is increasingly showing awareness of (and resistance to!) wearable IoT devices and the surveillance state. What is a future-AI-as-god-worshipping-technocrat to do?

Naturally, preferring asymmetric warfare, you change tactics and attack in an invisible way: synthetic biology. You create surveillance microbes, stage a crisis that demands their mass deployment "for your safety." You flood the zone with them, quickly replacing the natural microbiome across farms, forests, foods, guts, and wastewater. Suddenly, humanity is being monitored from within -- no wearable devices, no microchip implants. You welcome the myriad problems this disconnection from our ancestral microbiome will inevitably create, as each offers a chance to further use biotechnology and tighten your grip.

In Part One of this series, we explored that genetically engineered microbes have already been deployed across 2% of US farmland, with no oversight or containment.

In Part Two, we saw that the system is reclassifying microbes as "critical infrastructure," moving both to construct global governance for microbes and to shield the biotech companies who manufacture them from any liability.

Now, we expose what this infrastructure actually does, and in doing so, finally learn what the technocrats mean when they say "biodigital convergence": the construction of a planetary-scale surveillance grid comprising genetically engineered (GE) microbes that sense and report on their surroundings, be that in soil or grape or large intestine.

Elon Musk claims brain microchip has allowed monkey to "control a computer"

Elon Musk took his colleagues by surprise with an unplanned announcement at a presentation by his secretive neurotechnology company, Neuralink, on Tuesday. 

Musk cofounded Neuralink in 2016. Its goal is to create a chip that could enable a "brain-computer interface." And according to Musk, the company has already had some success — with monkeys.

During the 90-minute event, Musk and various senior staffers at Neuralink presented the company's ambition to design a chip capable of being implanted in the human brain that could receive and transmit signals to the organ.
The near-term goal would be to treat various serious brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, although ultimately Musk's ambition is to achieve "symbiosis with artificial intelligence."

The Swedish Are Micro-chipping Themselves By The Thousands

According to a report by NPR, the microchips can be used for a plethora of different things. The chips are designed to speed up users’ daily routines and make their lives more convenient when accessing their homes, offices, and gyms. The microchips make it is as easy as swiping their hands against digital readers. The microchips can also be used to store emergency contact details, social media profiles, e-tickets for events, and rail journeys within Sweden.

At least one scientist is speaking out on the possible negative outcomes of having a massive number of people microchipped. Ben Libberton, a British scientist based in southern Sweden, is among those starting to campaign for lawmakers to keep a closer eye on developments. “What is happening now is relatively safe. But if it’s used everywhere, if every time you want to do something and instead of using a card you use your chip, it could be very, very easy to let go of [personal] information,” he says. Libberton, a trained microbiologist now working in science communication, says one of his main concerns is how the chips could be used to share data about our physical health and bodily functions.

“Because it’s implanted in your body, when more health-related information starts being used and incorporated into the chip and being transmitted — that could create an extra layer of privacy that we really need to look at and take care of before it’s widely used,” he says according to NPR.

So many in Sweden are signing up to be chipped that the main company producing the microchips says it cannot keep up with the demand for this technology. More than 4,000 Swedes have decided the technology would be perfect for them and have a microchip embedded in their hand, but with one company, Biohax International, dominating the market, demand is outpacing supply. The chipping firm was started five years ago by Jowan Österlund, a former professional body piercer. After spending the last two years working full time on the project, Österlund is currently developing training materials so he can hire Swedish doctors and nurses to help take on some of his heavy workloads.

“Having different cards and tokens verifying your identity to a bunch of different systems just doesn’t make sense,” Österlund says. “Using a chip means that the hyper-connected surroundings that you live in every day can be streamlined.”

Thousands of Swedes are inserting microchips into themselves – here's why

Thousands of people in Sweden have inserted microchips, which can function as contactless credit cards, key cards and even rail cards, into their bodies. Once the chip is underneath your skin, there is no longer any need to worry about misplacing a card or carrying a heavy wallet. But for many people, the idea of carrying a microchip in their body feels more dystopian than practical.

Some have suggested that Sweden's strong welfare state may be the cause of this recent trend. But actually, the factors behind why roughly 3,500 Swedes have had microchips implanted in them are more complex than you might expect. This phenomenon reflects Sweden's unique biohacking scene. If you look underneath the surface, Sweden's love affair with all things digital goes much deeper than these microchips. 

The term biohackers refers to those amateur biologists who conduct experiments in biomedicine, but do so outside of traditional institutions – such as universities, medical companies and other scientifically controlled environments. Just as computer hackers hack computers, biohackers hack anything biological. 

Biohacking is also a culture and a diverse one, with many different subgroups – all with different types of interests, goals and ideologies. But within this diversity there are two main groups: "wetware hackers" and transhumanists.

Wetware hackers are citizen science hobby biologists who build laboratory equipment from household utensils. They conduct so called "frugal science", where they find inexpensive solutions that will improve the living standards for people in developing countries. But they also do more playful experiments where plants are genetically modified to become fluorescent, or algae is used to make new types of beer.

The other group are the transhumanists, who focus on enhancing and improving the human body – with the aim, in the long run, of improving the human race. Only through bettering ourselves – and escaping biological boundaries – will humans be able to compete with AI in the future. 

Often, different biohacking scenes reflect the different societies and cultures in which they develop. So, for example, European biohackers generally differ from their North American counterparts. North American groups are concerned with developing alternatives to the established healthcare practices. European groups, meanwhile, are more focused on finding ways of helping people in developing countries or engaging in artistic bio-projects.

Wireless system can power devices inside the body

MIT researchers, working with scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, have developed a new way to power and communicate with devices implanted deep within the human body. Such devices could be used to deliver drugs, monitor conditions inside the body, or treat disease by stimulating the brain with electricity or light.

The implants are powered by radio frequency waves, which can safely pass through human tissues. In tests in animals, the researchers showed that the waves can power devices located 10 centimeters deep in tissue, from a distance of 1 meter.

“Even though these tiny implantable devices have no batteries, we can now communicate with them from a distance outside the body. This opens up entirely new types of medical applications,” says Fadel Adib, an assistant professor in MIT’s Media Lab and a senior author of the paper, which will be presented at the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Data Communication (SIGCOMM) conference in August.

Thousands in Sweden have implanted microchips in their skin for sake of 'convenience'

More than 3,000 people in Sweden have implanted tiny microchips beneath their skin to replace their credit card information, identification, keys, train tickets, among other everyday items, Agence France-Press announced Sunday.

The implant, which is about the size of a grain of rice, utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, also found in credit cards, debit cards, key fobs, and smartphones. This technology is considered "passive," which means the microchip stores data that can be read by other devices but cannot read data themselves.  


his might resemble an Orwellian nightmare to many, but in Sweden, residents are flocking to get these implanted microchips by "convenience over concerns of potential personal data violations," AFP explained.

Governments in Europe quietly experimented with embedding the small chip in humans in 2015 in Sweden, and several other countries in the region, before the recent rollout.

"Swedes have gone on to be very active in microchipping, with scant debate about issues surrounding its use, in a country keen on new technology and where the sharing of personal information is held up as a sign of a transparent society," AFP notes.
Ulrika Celsing is one of 3,000 Swedes with a microchip implanted in her hand - a process called "biohacking." The 28-year-old told AFP, "It was fun to try something new and to see what one could use it for to make life easier in the future."

Celsing explained that the microchip has turned into an "electronic handbag" and has even replaced her gym card.

She can even book a train ticket online, and then use her hand like a ticket to board a train.

House Passed Bill Allowing Government to Microchip Citizens with ‘Mental Disabilities’

Though the bill only targets those with conditions such as Alzheimers and autism, critics say the bill’s passage will open a “pandora’s box” of invasive government surveillance.

Six years ago, NBC Nightly News boldly predicted that all Americans would be fitted with RFID microchips by the year 2017. Though at the time, NBC’s prediction seemed far-fetched, the House recently passed a bill that would bring a micro-chipped populace closer to reality before year’s end. Last Thursday, the House passed HR 4919, also known as Kevin and Avonte’s Law, which would allow the US attorney general to award grants to law enforcement for the creation and operation of “locative tracking technology programs.”


Though the program’s mission is to find “individuals with forms of dementia or children with developmental disabilities who have wandered from safe environments,” it provides no restriction on the tracking programs inclusion of other individuals. The bill would also require the attorney general to work with the secretary of health and human services and unnamed health organizations to establish the “best practices” for the use of tracking devices.

Those in support of the legislation maintain that such programs could prevent tragedies where those with mental or cognitive disabilities wandered into dangerous circumstances. Yet, others have called these good intentions a “Trojan horse” for the expansion of a North American police state as the bill’s language could be very broadly interpreted.

Researchers Incorporate Silicon into a Living Organism: is this the Building of a Bridge between Man and Machine?

Silicon is the second most common element in the Earth's crust, after oxygen. However, aside from its non-organic use by certain sea sponges and microorganisms, very little silicon is used by Earth's biology, despite making heavy use of other common elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, iron, magnesium and oxygen. This has presented a long-standing puzzle for scientists: why would nature ignore such an otherwise useful substance? While artificial methods of binding carbon and silicon have been available for some time, researchers with the California Institute of Technology were curious to see if they could get an organism to produce the same result, as a product of its metabolism. They selected the gene for producing an enzyme that could accomplish this from a bacterium, Rhodothermus marinus, that lives in Iceland's hot springs, and introduced the involved DNA into a strain of ordinary E. coli bacteria. When fed a particular type of silicon-containing precursors, the enzyme produced by the modified bacteria began catalyzing the silicon-carbon bonding process. After tweaking the bacteria with specialized mutations, the team was able to produce microbes that showed an increased efficiency in producing the silicon-organic compounds, to the point where they could out-produce artificial production methods. 

“It’s remarkable that nature is poised to do all sorts of wild things in the presence of this new manmade food,” exclaims study lead and CalTech chemical engineer Frances Arnold. Arnold hopes that this development will help researchers understand if there was a reason as to why Earth biology evolved to exclude silicon, or if it was just a matter of luck. “We can start to explore what are the costs and benefits of incorporating silicon into life.”

While nature mightn't have had as much of a use for it, humans have incorporated silicon into modern technology, capitalizing on the element's properties, from the piezoelectric properties exhibited by quartz crystals, to the growth of silica wafers for microchips. And this is where the divide between man and machine could possibly be bridged: this new biological Si-O bonding process could one day lead to the melding of silicon electronics to carbon-based human tissue. This could potentially allow us to directly benefit from advantages that are currently only found in machines: the instant download of knowledge directly into our brains, medical diagnostic nanomachines -- a new world of possibilities.

One-third of American adults say they'd be 'enthusiastic' about having a microchip implanted in their brain to 'enhance their thinking power'

Over one-third of Americans would not only accept a microchip implant in their brain, but would be "enthusiastic" about the receiving the device to 'enhance their thinking power.'

Once the subject of dystopian science fiction novels, three emerging technologies served as a focal point for a new survey to glean the public's willingness to accept what many would call exceedingly invasive biomedical 'enhancements.'

Pew Research Center surveyed 4,726 adults — 47 of whom additionally agreed to participate in focus groups — to discern not only how well putative biomedical advancements might be received, but where the public stands on inherent ethical and moral questions arising from their use.

Given previous trepidations and warnings from government whistleblowers such technology could easily be employed for less than benevolent purposes, results proved a startling level of both acceptance and eagerness.

Keep in mind, every one of these technologies, while not yet widely available for elective use, are actively being developed — and though the majority of those surveyed expressed reservations for their use in otherwise healthy people, a significant number essentially said, 'sign me up.'

Though 69 percent of respondents claimed they would be "worried" about an implant — known as a neuroprosthesis — to improve cognitive abilities, fully 34 percent said they were "enthusiastic" about the idea. Largely divided along religious lines, many felt such invasive technology to improve the ability to think and process information would cross the line of "meddling" too much with nature.

But of the three biomedical 'improvements' in question, a microchip brain implant was perhaps the least Orwellian — as well as the least accepted.

DARPA Spent $62 Million Creating Microchips For Humans

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is in the process of making a neural-coding device capable of controlling artificial limbs when seeded in the brain. The device has had success in animal studies and the first human trials are set for 2017. The Pentagon has subsidized the institution $62 million to help foster this mind-control technology. Meanwhile, the mainstream media is pushing for the micochipping of children sooner rather than later. 

 

During a recent televised report by NBC News, the news station purported the micro-chipping of children by the state was as normal as bar codes for consumers: “When barcodes first came out in the late 1960s, people were appalled. They were wary of them and did not understand the concept. Today, it is so commonplace, we don’t even notice it. A microchip would work much in the same way.” 

 

This declaration is a reflection of the mentality of the mainstream media, which sees people as objects fit for labeling rather than persons with intrinsic moral value. Although DARPA touts the brain chips as a way to protect children, in actuality, this sort of technology has more to do with control than it does public safety.

The Government Wants To Microchip All Kids “Sooner Rather Than Later”

The U.S. government intends to further their control over the lives of Americans by introducing microchipping for children in the near future.

As time goes by, the government seems to want to regulate the lives of Americans more and more. Sometimes these decisions for further regulation actually help the American people, which is always up for debate and depends on who you are, and sometimes the reasons behind these decisions are dubious and must be called into question.

The latter scenario has been occurring recently as news of the future of tracking people has been spread around.

The concept is simple but the implications behind it are serious: the U.S. government intends to introduce microchipping for children in the near future in an effort to better keep track of them.

Why Elon Musk Is Advocating For Brain Chipping The Human Race

Would you ever chip yourself? The idea of human microchipping, once confined to the realms of science fiction and conspiracy theory, has fascinated people for ages, but it always seemed like something for the distant future. Yet patents for human ‘implants’ have been around for years, and the discussion around chipping the human race has been accelerating recently.

Remember when credit and debit cards went from smooth plastic to microchipped? That could be you in a few years, as multiple corporations are pushing to microchip the human race. In fact, microchip implants in humans are already on the market, and an American company called Applied Digital Solutions (ADS) has developed one approximately the size of a grain of rice which has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for distribution and implementation. Here is a video taken three years ago of DARPA Director and Google Executive Regina Dugan promoting the idea of microchipping humans.

Elon Musk has now weighed in on the debate, referring to microchips as a ‘neural lace,’ and arguing that they will be “the thing that really matters for humanity to achieve symbiosis with machines.” Musk has expressed his concern that artificial intelligence might one day take over humanity and possibly treat us like a second class species. He believes the only way to prevent this type of future is this neural lace.

"Someday We'll Be Microchipping All Of Our Children"

Would you allow microchips to be surgically implanted in your children if that would keep them safer?  This is already being done to pets on a widespread basis, and a shocking local NBC News report is promoting the idea that if it is good for our pets, then we should be doing it to our children as well.  As you will see below, the report even puts a guilt trip on parents by asking them this question: “How far would you go to keep your children secure?” 

Of course most parents very much want to keep their children safe, and a microchip would enable authorities to track them down if they were lost or stolen.  But is this really a good idea?  And where is all of this technology eventually leading?  If you have not seen this very disturbing local NBC News report yet, you can view it right here

Biometric Military Tattoos Explore ‘Human Circuit Board’

The tattoo could also be used to relay information about a soldier’s environment, such as whether he or she is being exposed to biological agents.

According to TechCrunch, the tattoos are part of a new trend of “biowearables.” Chaotic Moon CEO Ben Lamm said, “This is not something that can be easily removed like a Fitbit. It can be underneath a flack jacket, directly on the skin to be collecting this data and being reported back.”

The tattoo’s general purpose is to monitor body temperature, hydration, and the stress level of individual soldiers, but it could also detect biological agents in the air or “pathogens in a soldier’s body.” That information would be uploaded to military networks “via Bluetooth or location-based low-frequency mesh networks like those used for apps like Jott or Firechat.”

Chaotic Moon’s biowearables are temporary, which reduces the cost and the “invasive” nature of putting on the soldier’s body for monitoring purposes. For example, the tattoos would replace options of actually embedding a chip under a soldier’s skin.

RFID implants into humans coming sooner than you think

British researcher Mark Gasson had a tiny chip injected underneath the skin on his hand in March 2009. The chip, according to reports, was just a bit more advanced than the versions pet owners use to track them, and it turned Gasson into a walking swipe card, essentially.

"With a wave of his wrist," Business Insider (BI) reported, "he could open security doors at the University of Reading laboratory, where his experiment was being conducted, and he could unlock his cell phone just by cradling it."

A year after that initial implant, Gasson infected it with a computer virus, one that he could pass onto other computer systems if the building's computer networks had been programmed to read his chip. As he moved about his workplace, he spread the virus and corrupted computer systems, leaving those areas of the building inaccessible to his colleagues.

At the time of that experiment, Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist and author of the book The Future of the Mind, told Fox News that demonstrating the ability to spread the computer virus was an "important point" because "we're going to have more chips in our body and clothing."

An ominous warning, indeed.

IBM Develops a New Chip That Functions Like a Brain

Inspired by the architecture of the brain, scientists have developed a new kind of computer chip that uses no more power than a hearing aid and may eventually excel at calculations that stump today’s supercomputers.

The chip, or processor, is named TrueNorth and was developed by researchers at IBM and detailed in an article published on Thursday in the journal Science. It tries to mimic the way brains recognize patterns, relying on densely interconnected webs of transistors similar to the brain’s neural networks.

The chip’s electronic “neurons” are able to signal others when a type of data — light, for example — passes a certain threshold. Working in parallel, the neurons begin to organize the data into patterns suggesting the light is growing brighter, or changing color or shape.

The processor may thus be able to recognize that a woman in a video is picking up a purse, or control a robot that is reaching into a pocket and pulling out a quarter. Humans are able to recognize these acts without conscious thought, yet today’s computers and robots struggle to interpret them.
